No ill feelings towards him, as I don’t know the guy but I would be happy for us to make some of our money back and move on. I agree with Finnegan but the bolded bit is a good point. I do think thought, that’s the tone and attitude been set by the manager for the last two years (Soumare did show an improvement under Smith). I don’t think it’s an excuse so much as you’d want a player to take control of his own performances and standard. But it is part of the perspective that was mentioned in Finnegan’s post. It is why any younger players who have been signed or come through to the first team under Rodgers, after covid anyway, personally I am unwilling to write off just yet. If we could get our money back on Soumare then great. If it’s going to be a typical Italian offer, I’d sooner see what he can do for us. 5
st albans fox Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 I reckon the most we get is £15m he hasn’t performed to the expected levels

My view is that he can go somewhere else and be decent without any eggage. Being good in a foreign league doesn’t mean that he would have ever come good here.

Usual Italian football business, unless they're selling. Kim Min-Jae went to Bayern Munich after they paid his release clause, so they have cash. His wages will also likely be a lot less than Ndombele's. A season long loan is admittedly way more likely though!

Wouldn't put it past De Laurentiis to consider the sale of one of Osimhen or Kvara either. He almost seems to have been touting Osimhen to PSG. But they'll be absolutely tight bastards about how they spend to replace. They'll have the resources but a loan would meet their MO. 1

Muzzy_no7 Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 Having seen Napoli in person last season Soumare is the last person I thought they’d be after😂.

Saying he's a pub footballer is a bit silly and he certainly has pedigree. But saying Maresca could get a tune out of him is also a bit silly! I never watched him pre-Leicester, so I can only judge what I've seen...and I don't think he's had a single good game here. Even the Wolves game at home which people mention as being one of his best, I thought he was just average. He's clearly available yet there is zero chance a Prem team will come in for him - I suppose it might be that he's just not suited to football in this country, who knows. Either way, he needs to go. For me, towards the end of the season after Smith arrived, along with Soyuncu, he was one of our better players imo. It was the first time he was employed in the role in which he excelled in in France. As for his energy and effort, he made the media poster boys Tielemans and Maddison look pedestrian! He also displayed some fight that many others didn't. Had we employed a midfield containing Soumare, Mendy and KDH (and even Albrighton had he been here) instead of the pathetic Tielemans and useless feeble post World Cup Mr 'look at me' Maddison, we might have made a better fist of it. It's too much of a coincidence that there were so many poorly performing players under the last regime. That's why as well as Rodgers it was essential to rid ourselves of his staff and coaches too. Players like Soumare and Daka etc were very promising young players ... until they arrived at Leicester, we were like poison to them in so many ways. Negatively, tactics, rounds pegs square holes, excuses, discipline, professionalism, fitness, attitude are just some of them. I wouldn't have blamed Fofana, Soumare, Daka or any other young foreign player wanting to leave, we were rotten to the core and deserved to go down. We may just be surprised what Maresca can do with some of these ... hopefully! 8
Stadt Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 Even in a succesful set up you still have to carry him, he doesn't work hard enough, nor he is he able to play as a 6 and he's not creative/threatening enough to play as an 8. He's had 1 successful season in his career up to now and that was in a niche set up at Lille. 1

I don't begrudge anyone wanting to sell him, it hasn't worked out. I'd say he's been as disappointing a signing as the likes of Kramaric really. Whilst I do think there's a very real chance Maresca could get a tune out of him and I do think Rodgers has played a significant part in his failure here, I'm totally happy to just write him off and sell him. Cut our losses, fair play. But I also think the overreaction to how "bad" he is has been flat out ridiculous. Extremely black and white thinking with no perspective, no nuance, just "yeah he's a pub footballer mate he's shit" and "he can't even do the basics, can't pass" and "he's just lazy doesn't do owt." I can very well see him going to Napoli and a lot of people looking on quite embarrassed when it turns out that, what do you know, when a player is in a positive environment, in a good team, well coached, in a system that fits him (because he'd be absolutely perfect as cover for Anguissa) he'll thrive. You're talking about a French league champion and u21 international that came here highly regarded in his home country. He's quite clearly not shit, is he. It just hasn't worked out here. I honestly thought those games under Smith, he was looking a good player, but I seemed to be alone in this view 5
Ric Flair Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 Turned down / faffed about on a £15m + add ons bid from Monaco last summer. Would be galling to not get something similar to that this summer but appreciate circumstances have changed since then and not for the better! 1
Buzzell Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 Very surprised Napoli are even sniffing around him. They could do so much better.

He's had two years, it's not like we haven't given him a fair crack - He's been woeful. If you mean only playing sporadically in the wrong position by Rodgers a fair crack of the whip. 1

Dahnsouff Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 Well their fans are keen as backup to Anguissa (sp?) and apparently they were interested whilst at Lille

Think about what Rodgers said about him when he first arrived (wanted to make him more box to box and score goals), then look how he employed him, either trying to do that or defensive midfielder. If you then read this demonstrating his strong and weak points, it was no surprise it didn't work out. Likewise he improved under Smith somewhat when employed in a more natural role. https://breakingthelines.com/player-analysis/player-analysis-boubakary-soumare/ 2

st albans fox Posted 19 July 2023 Posted 19 July 2023 13 minutes ago, Dahnsouff said: As long as there is an obligation, do we care? Well a sale goes in the credit column in one go. A loan with obligation only gets the loan fee in this season with the fee the following season. This is complicated by bouba being in year three of his contract so this year has 5 million in the negative column. If we sell him now then we have to lose the whole 15 mill left this season so if we sell for 15 mill then it’s a zero sum affect on our ffp for this year. If we loan out for 3m then we have negative 2m on ffp this season but assuming they then buy for 15m next summer that puts 5m onto our books for next season. so selling or loaning with obligation isn’t much different this season. Losing his salary of approx 2.5m would be helpful. selling players in the first 2 or 3 years of their contract isn’t as wonderful for our finances as we think! Will be similar for daka 2 2
