@inckley fox post in the last couple of pages summed this all up better than me. Winks has been proven to not be a particularly effective player in anything other than a system where we heavily dominated possession and had in general a team far better than than the competition at the time. He's lacking defensively, isn't really creative in a conventional sense, hardly ever scores. He's got one thing he's good at and it's not actually all that effective when you take it out of a team that had far better players than the opposition.

 

We also don't dominate the midfield battle with him playing either. I could understand some of the pass he gets if he didn't have the track record he does. Unfortunately because of the shambolic recruitment and total neglect of this position (which people on here were telling me at the time wasn't an issue) we go cap in hand to him.

Winks probably wouldn’t be a signing many of us would make but the fact is, he’s here and he’s far more effective as a footballer than Skipp. The ability to play on the half turn is crucial whether we are dominating the ball or not dominating the ball and Skipp simply can’t do that. Skipp wall passing back to Okoli is not going to alleviate pressure or win us games.

It’s understood that City’s promotion to the Premier League in 2024 triggered a clause in Winks’ deal that added an extra year to his contract.

 

Winks’ speculated wages may put off clubs considering a move for the 30-year-old, but it’s understood that his pay packet is less than half the £90,000-a-week figure that has been floating around.

 

Clauses in the contracts of all City players saw wages cut drastically following last season’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.

The only saving grace is his book value will be about £2.5m in the summer so just got to hope somebody sees it as a relatively risk free transfer and we can cover his book value and get his wages off the books.

So it’s a good thing right 🤷‍♂️ 

1. he’s not on the 90k that everyone hates him for but more like 40k which is inline with other clubs players (as are all our other players it would seem)

2. potential of earning a fee this summer so again can come off the incompetent list of we let ‘x’ player run down his contract

3. he can be a useful asset

This one of my big issues with KP and the way they do business. This clause would've been activated almost two years ago and we are only just finding this out now?! The club is more secretive than North Korea

Does his book value get stretched over 4 years now or is it still over the initial 3? 
 

I would’ve thought it disappears in the summer and we could then sell him for free or any fee?

I guess this means we'll get a fee for him, but anything we get will be positive in the calculations?

 

With the team around him and the right manager he's useful.  But that remains to be seen.

Part of me feels he fully deserves a stint in league one but then the realisation hits that he would take up pretty much all of our wage allowance for that league. If any team in the history of football is going to have a player on 90k a week in league one, its definitely us.

I don't think PSR will even come into the thinking if we have Harry Winks in League One. It will be get rid at all costs to save the club from being bankrupt first.
