Introduction

On a rainy Friday night away at St Mary's stadium in 2019, Leicester beat Southampton 9-0, equalling Manchester United's 9–0 win against Ipswich Town in 1995 for the largest win in the history of the Premier League. The result also set the new record for the biggest away win in the history of English top-flight football. Fifteen months later, on 2 February 2021, Southampton were beaten 9–0 again, this time to Manchester United.

Leicester started the match being 3rd in the table, level with Chelsea on 17 points but ahead on goal difference.

During the Match

Ben Chilwell opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Leicester were 3–0 up by the 19th minute, thanks to Youri Tielemans and Ayoze Pérez. Pérez added the fourth on the 39th minute, with Jamie Vardy scoring on the stroke of half-time to send Leicester into the break ahead 5–0. Pérez completed his hat-trick on the 57th minute, with Vardy adding his second and Leicester's seventh a minute later. James Maddison scored a 85th minute free-kick before Jamie Vardy completed his own hat-trick with a penalty four minutes into stoppage time. The final whistle blasted after the penalty was made.

It was only the second time in Premier League history that two players scored a hat-trick for one team in the same game.

The Aftermath

Leicester moved up to second in the table, while Southampton dropped to 18th. As the match took place two days before the first anniversary of the 2018 Leicester helicopter crash, several players dedicated the win to their late owner, who died in that incident. Southampton players and coaching staff later donated their wages from the day of the game to a charity run by the club, Saints Foundation.

Still only got 3 points though.

Beat them at our place and we'd have got top 4.

History books state we won 0-9 though.

Missing out on the top 4 will be forgotten about.

We scored more goals than the All Blacks scored points v England, on the following day in the rugby WC semi final.

Bonkers game of football.

Couldn’t get to the game so me, @StriderHiryu and about 50 others watched agog at the Stag’s Head, with the night getting more and more mad.

Was absolutely buzzing.

All this does is just send a relentless wave of depression through my body……

It’s basically the equivalent to winning the lottery and a few years later after living a stable and comfortable life, decide to flush your money down the toilet!

Their defending was so bad even I was almost angry at the end of the game.

One of the few times in my life I've honestly really felt genuine sympathy for the opposition fans. Disgraceful how much their players downed tools. Was so blatant.

The past 2 years really sour the highlights of Brendon's tenure for me, it's really hard to appreciate the good stuff of which there was alot. Shame he wasn't sacked a year earlier

Should of gone after the Forest cup game. Get someone in then for 10+ games of that season and pre season. Really pisses me off because I still think had we done that we’d still be in the premiership now.

That tall, long haired, Southampton defender was absolutely shocking!! Who’d ever sign a donkey like that…

I feel exactly the same. I've not been able to watch the Premier League season or the FA cup win back since we went down.

I still feel sick about what's happened and just want to live in the now and concentrate on getting back on track. Plenty of time to watch all that in years to come.
