I assume Vestergaard was one match ban.

So who do we pick as back line for next match?

I would go with Vestergaard and Coady but it's a hard choice

At the beginning of the season I was thinking who is going to partner Coady

Now I am thinking who is going to Vestergaard

Easily. I have never been a fan of him but it helps we're now a division below.

Same with Vestergaard.

We've basically got Faes, Coady, Doyle, Justin and Vestergaard vying for two places.

It's absolutely mental squad depth for this level.

2 places? How did you get to that number. JJ and Doyle in for that LB/LCB option and the other 3 vying for the 2 traditional CB roles. Should throw in Souttar as well. Fantastic quality at this level but we're clearly a full back short at the moment.

Got away with one last night but Faes has been good, practically playing 2 positions and is crucial to us.

For me, Vestergaard is in possession and should come back in. Interesting how long Coady is happy not being first choice.

I would say it’s one traditional CB role. I don’t think Vestergaard or Coady can play on the right of the 3. Faes and Souttar are the options for that position.

Hamza looks like he might cover for the right and left side as he came on for Justin last night.

I’d absolutely play Coady. Not because he’s better, but because he needs the game time. Especially with an international break looming. Otherwise we get out the other side and his match fitness is back to virtually zero again.

Rotation. All 3 are deserving of a starting spot at the moment.

I know stability at the back is the usual go to and forming a solid partnership, but I have confidence that the 3 of them can handle rotation.

The redemption of Vesty is a wonderful story, and i love watching him play out of his skin and loving his football.

BUT - he is out of contract at the end of the season, so should be back up from here on. Faes never seems to get a game off, so the 3 of them need rotating with the view that Faes and Coady as the first choices.

We were talking about this last night and given how often he wanders forward into midfield areas, whether Faes could do the Doyle role and leave Vesty and Coady as CBs? It would also take the pressure off Justin playing every game.

Otherwise my thought at the minute is for Coady and Faes. The way yellows are being dished out these days players will get game time from suspensions anyway.

I’d be surprised if Coady and Vestergaard ever play at the same time. The outside centre backs could be isolated against quick wingers and need to be abit more mobile to deal with it.

I see the options as..

RCB

Faes

Souttar

Justin

Hamza

CB

Vestergaard

Coady

Faes

LCB

Doyle

Justin

Hamza

Vesty, Faes, Coady.

JJ is clearly a more mobile option however at this level I don’t think is imperative. He’s clearly rusty and will take time.

That said, should we go up,  they will need replacing in their entirety. I don’t see them being fit for purpose in the PL. There’s clearly a gulf in quality between the two leagues. They sit in that black hole between the two. Fantastic resource in the Championship. Exposed in the Premiership.

Faes is the first defender on the team sheet. Gets into every side's first 11.

I would say that Vestergaard is better when we're trying to break a side down. I think we missed his ability to punch balls into the midfield last night, particularly in the first half.

Coady is the better defender and should play against sides that are actually going to attack us.

As with Ndidi, KDH and now Vesty who most wanted rid of under Bodgers. Have people realised it was not all the players fault.

Unreal really people saying Vesty should get the spot. At the beginning of August most wanted him gone or left to rot. Now he's just about first choice with very few moaning.

Even now I find it hard so many blamed certain players when it was Bodgers tactics not suiting the players we had.

Coady needs to take his chances when he gets them. But no way Vesty should be dropped for him after missing one game.

Exactly this. Except I was always a fan and put my head on a block (counterbalance to that I'm wrong about many players, Macateer this season especially)

Faes is simply light years ahead of this level.

They're slightly different positions tbf. Faes mobility is important in that right hand channel with the inverted full back next to him. He's an auxiliary right back a lot, Vestergaard would be very exposed having to do that.

Equally, I think Faes would be caught a bit short in the passing and first touch department if he had to do the Vestergaard role in the middle as a sort of quarterback full time.

Coady is somewhere in between the two, can probably do both things well enough at this level but not being as good as either at it separately.

I honestly see him as third choice as surprising as that is to me now. He can cover either but first choice is IMO is still Vestergaard and Faes.

Not sure how Coady would fair in the Doyle position. He's not exactly rapid but I'm not sure that's essential? I'd definitely keep JJ there for now.

Note that Coady tried that vertical pass into midfield (that Vestergaard does so successfully) in the first few minutes and executed poorly, leading to an early half-chance for PNE.

Don't think Coady tried it again
