It has been good to have KDH or Barnes as likely starters in recent years.

In the Skipp thread, there is a worry that he could block academy progression  if he came.

No academy player seems to be a certain starter.  Choudhury is best placed but his limitations have been much discussed.    Fellow FA Cup winner Thomas looks an unlikely starter.   Stolarczyk is behind Hermansen.   McAteer has had some good games but may not be Premier League level.  Nelson has huge potential but there are five cbs with more experience.    Alves and Braybrooke have huge potential.

The volume of names is promising  but none are certain  starters.

I am hoping one of them can emerge as a regular starter.

I think with nine subs, we should have one young player (i'm not including Choudhury  or Thomas in this)  from the academy available from the bench every match.

I agree, but winning matches is the priority, so sentimental selection will be out I feel. I also would like to see a youngster or two progress into the first team

All of those who broke through did so after successful loan spells. None of Alves, Braybrooke and Nelson have more than a season combined of senior games under their belt.

I’m sure one will break through - selling Chilwell, KDH and Barnes has earned the club £100m+ not many academies can boast those kind of numbers.

I’m not saying we should have sold all 3 before I’m leapt on.

Nelson was picked again of Coady at times last season - he looks promising. And surely this is the season Braybrooke/Alves breakthrough after nasty injuries.

I think our academy has done pretty well over, say, the last 5 years vs similar level clubs - we've had a fair few first-team regulars and Chilwell, Barnes, KDH were all sold for good money.

The club should be laser focused on getting academy kids in the first team IMO. Our main differentiating factor vs similar clubs is our top notch training ground and massive catchment area. We should exploit that as much as we can.

Wanyarma?

I saw him at home against Birmingham & he was awful, I then saw him away at Bournemouth & he got better & better as the game went on and then I don't think he played another minute last season afterwards and wasn't even on the bench for the last 5 games, he's already 21, what hope do they have?

Nelson really looks a player and then we go and buy additional centre backs, manager churn always means new players in, e.g. Okoli

I was actually really shocked to see Mcateer get the chance he did last season, and Wanya at the start. It was very un-pep like to bring players through early on. Especially because of the need for instant success. There were even games in the Premier League where Pep would go with less substitutes rather than giving a place to an Academy player.

But as the season went on you seen the same kind of stuff from Maresca. Two goalkeepers on the bench was just ridiculous.

We're in a situation now where we probably don't have the luxury to risk seeing how some players do. Its all about how many points we accumulate and quick. If we do end up going down then I'm sure Braybrooke, Alves and Nelson are all starting.

I think most of the names below could do with going out and getting valuable experience whilst also giving us all a sense of potential capability.

Luke Thomas - Personally my mind is already made up on this lad and what he can achieve, I think he would be an average Championship level defender.

Stolarczyk - Another season sitting on the bench & playing in the cup games isn't going to do a lot for both him or us, but needs must I suppose?

Nelson - Needs to go out on loan for a full season playing every week, hopefully a low level Championship team will take him on, or a promotion pushing League two.

McAteer - Squad filler at best for us, Personally not good enough for the Prem and average Championship player - Would sell if possible.

Wanya - Similar to Nelson, needs a loan and to play every week.

Braybrooke - Massive potential but coming back from a major injury so playing time management is crucial, maybe best to not push him for the first half of the season and look at a loan out second half depending on progress.

Alves - Clearly talented but like Braybrook game time needs to be managed, personally would like to see him playing regularly in the u23s with also bench & cup appearances for the first team.

To be fair..... Braybrooke and Alves aren't listed on the official Men's team roster on the LCFC website. and welcome to the most uninspiring list of midfielders you've ever seen!! lol

That would be an extremely conservative approach that would tell our younger players that they have a limited future here. Nelson, Alves & Braybrooke are ready & need game time.

We'd already have a few in there if it wasn't for Profit and Sustainability Rules forcing us to sell them.

It's still beyond me how selling players who come through your academy, usually local, usually support the club and don't want to leave is sustainable.

True but slightly misleading.

Nelson had one season on loan with 25 appearances (at two different clubs) in 22/23 and a few LCFC first team cup and league appearances in 23/24.

Braybrooke and Alves each have one LCFC first team cup appearance in 22/23.

I'm sure Braybrooke and Alves will get more experience in 24/25 but Nelson is well ahead in experience terms because of the injuries the other two suffered. (And Alves is a year younger).
