The Great Weekend Debate

102 members have voted

  1. 1. Today is Tues 4th Feb. Saturday is 8th February. What is the correct way to describe Saturday 8th February?

Let's settle this once and for all.

So I'm not biased I put the options in alphabetical order.

Spolier alert the correct answer is obviously this weekend.

Both, at least as today is Tuesday in the question, it’s not one or the other.

It’s fine to use either in the first part of the week. It’s when it gets to Friday or maybe Thursday that “next weekend” means the one after the current coming one imo.

Next weekend would surely be Saturday 15th February.....

The 2 who have voted next weekend - really want to understand the logic there please?

If someone said "let's meet up next weekend" to me on the Tuesday 4th, I'd be sat on my arse on Saturday 8th planning to see them on the 15th.

It baffles me anyone would think different but that's the beauty of the English language, clearly.

It's still the same if you use it on Monday or Friday

It won't be easy, but we'll soldier on and try to have a good time without you.

This weekend.

We need to put a stop to all these darn Americanisms creeping in. :englandsmile4wf:

This is correct on both counts.

This weekend but it depends on which day you consider to be the last day of the week. Some think it's Friday, whilst others say Sunday. So you get stuck with "but actually..." where it's just mental gymnastics.

Now if you want to talk about american terrorism, the MM/DD/YYYY formula is up there. I get it if the month is spelled-out like July 17th, 2025, that can be very helpful for a journal or something of the like but 07/17/2025 is just wrong.

Last weekend = the one just gone.

This weekend = the one that's coming up next.

Next weekend = the one after this weekend.

After the event, the date 9/11 confused me for quite some time. I kept thinking what happened on November the 9th?

This is going to be my least popular post lol

MM/DD/YYYY is clearly superior to DD/MM/YYYY. The day is by far the least important information in the date, so why feed that to me first? What am I supposed to do with that information until I read the month? At least in MM/DD I know the season, the approximate weather, etc. before narrowing it down to the specific day of that month.

Now before you get on your soapbox, YYYYMMDD is clearly the best date format. The information is organized in terms of most important to least, and it is easily sortable.

Also, I am not willing to accept my country as being at fault for This/Next weekend issues. At least where I live, the common parlance is to refer to the upcoming weekend as "This" and "Next" refers to the weekend of the following week.

just reverse the order instead of butchering the order of importance? The argument for YYYY/MM/DD argument goes against the argument for the MM/DD/YYYY format

I saw this picture online which led me to my post earlier

This is honestly God's work.

It seems I'm wrong which is sad but also means I should change the way I'm engaging with the world.

My Mrs detests the way I use this and it seems that everyone else does too.

Useful to know. Dispiriting, but useful.

The day is the most important part of the information due to the fact it’s the variable that changes on a day to day basis. Knowing I have an appointment on x month means there’s another 28-31 options. You should always lead the data set with what is more likely to change. Hence day month year.
