No sentimentality, no thinking players 'will be good at this level'. Anybody on >= 15k pw has to considered for sale.

First priority is the big(get) sales so we have some money in the bank with a relatively strong negotiating position for the following sales. Get Fatawu out first so we have £20m in the bank  so we're not desperate come September. Then probably Nelson and Monga if they can bump us up towards the £40m mark in sales.

The priorities then have to be the relatively big wages for players that just don't get on the pitch more than 50% of the time. Choudhury, Reid, Kristiansen, Vestergaard, Souttar, Vietes, Coulibaly etc.

Then players that play but have just let us down enough times, e.g Mavadidi, Winks, Skipp, Okoli, Thomas (although there will be no takers for him,I'd imagine) - thankfully most will want out which makes our job easier.

We have about ~10 players out of contract so we're looking at needing to sign 15 or so players.

Alves         ST       Evans

   Braybrooke     Page

                  DM

LB  CB  Wilson-Brown Aluko

             Stolarcyzk

Would be the basis that we should look to fill around next season. I'm not saying this is the goal but working from a younger hungry while still talented core is what we need, not something with the whiff of rebuild - instead we have to go the whole way.

The rest should be 22-28 year olds with a point to prove and 90% of signings need some shelf life, can't be in the position to need to rebuild in 18 months again.

part of me would snap your hand off for that starting 11 in league 1 next year, as would mean we haven’t wasted money on absolute garbage again.

Do think it’s likely Vesty and Nelson leave after relegation though

As much as your sentiment is right, this would be absolute suicide. You need some sort of experience as well as physicality in league one. This team reeks of physical weakness.

We have to sign some experience if we're only keeping academy lads.

Obviously the likes of Ayew, Reid, Vestergaard etc will have people worried but we need to sign the next Morgan, Huth, Fuchs etc to give these lads stability and to maintain high standards.

The senior players can't survive another relegation surely?

We'll cut the squad to about 15 or 16 players max.

The younger players will stay along the few academy players coming through.

The sign 2 strikers.

That should keep us afloat until we recover our finances and go again.

I’m fine with 1 year deals with an option to extend for another but I’m sick of experience for the sake of it. We haven’t successfully signed a Wasilewski, GTF, Cambiasso signing since those players

I cannot remember a time when I was not bothered about at least one player being a must not sell. They can all go for me. Every last one. Monga has not yet shown his worth. Fatawu has but he seems set to leave IMO. We need to get the whole rotten lot out and ideally Rudkin will exit and Top will take a back seat. This feels worse than the last time we went to League 1.

How we can lose 70 million and sign utter dross is beyond me.

On the plus side we have won premier league and fa cup and charity shield. Would I swop that for mediocrity. Not a chance.

I do remember the utter joy of that time. Like I say would I swop it?! Nope.

So I completely agree actually - and similar to bringing in Powell, Berner, Dickov last time we went down to league 1, and keeping the likes of Howard and Oakley - we will 100% need some experience and physicality.

I suppose my sentiment is more, there is a core of youngsters we have to build around and I just hope we don’t bring in the league 1 equivalents of Winks and Coady

Huth, Fuchs, Evans and Iborra would all fall into the bracket of successful signings of 30+ year old lads too.

Another year of Stolarczyk between the posts scares me to death tbh, he's being protected by us having so much possession every game, I don't think he's pulled off a decent save in about 3 months

They weren’t signed as explicitly experienced squad players but as first teamers. Falling into the experience for the sake of it trap will **** us.

If we want some experience, firstly just make sure they’re good and will play. No vague, intangible “good around the dressing room” guff like we’ve seen with Coady.

Sounds like we're agreeing then.

There's also the point that our play style back then benefited older signings.

Nowadays we play a slow, open, technical style of football which would have left Morgan, Hugh and Fuchs (technically gifted but no longer had the legs for constant overlapping) caught out. Technical experienced defenders will not want to join us.

That team also made up for slower legs at the back with a midfield and attack of some of the most athletic players in football. Kante, Drinkwater, Albrighton, Vardy, Okazaki all could run marathons without breaking a sweat. Now we have one of the most unathletic teams in the league.

We need to focus on ability and athleticism in the transfer market first and worry about experience later. We're a team that's overloaded with prem experience and yet we can't beat one of the worst championship teams ever, goes to show how much experience is worth if the players aren't good enough. The answer is very little.

Put the entire squad up for sale except for any academy players.

I think this will basically be what happens. The issue with shifting most of our players previously has been wages, I think with another 40% pay cut or whatever it is on relegation that would mean that lots like Winks, Vestegaard etc will finally be on less than they can get elsewhere and they'll then swiftly get their agents to get them moves.

£15k/week is still an obscene wage in L1. Get shot of anyone we can

Posted

If the likes of Choudhury, Winks, Vestergaard etc stay with us in L1 then they clearly don't think anything of the club, fans and history on a level not seen since Dennis Wise. Hopefully this situation will be helped by their careers being practically over if they played in L1. Surely even they have more pride than that?

I believe that they don't think anything of the club so it will be painful to observe. Them and their agents will still want a sizeable chunk of flesh to get them moved and Top and Rudkin have demonstrated that they are too stubborn and stupid to take a painful short term hit in the interests of long term gain

It is but we can’t pivot to immediately offering players £4k, we’re not an average Championship -> L1 relegated club.

As much as it’s tempting we can’t literally get rid of everyone, we need to keep some players as its unrealistic needing to sign 20 players

honestly signing even 6 or 7 is unrealistic with the recruitment set up we've got. Fans understandably want to go scorched earth, because there isn't a single likeable senior player on our books at the moment, but this board have shown they cannot handle a full rebuild in a single summer. Start selling Fatawu, winks, skipp, faes, thomas, choudhury, mavididi and the rest to whoever will take them and we genuinely will be in a academy players only sort of state. Have to kinda keep the least loathable ones around for a bit.
