I was disappointed at having to give up my season ticket, that I had held for over thirty years due to health reasons, but with the prospect of Martin Russell as Manager it is a delight. The owners have clearly got a one tract  mind. Appointing someone who has been a serial failure to the position is in keeping with promoting Rudkin, who with the inept backing of Top has got us relegated twice and ruined the progress that had been made under Vichai. This appointment is probably the most unpopular one in LCFC’s history. I have no wish to watch players who are incapable of playing possession based football being beaten week after week by teams, possibly less talented but playing effective football. In Division One you need players who play direct football with a good physical presence similar to those in Nigel Pearson’s team.

I think his appointment smacks of Claude Puel's in 2017 a bit!

Russell Martin has manged 269 games and of those in 46 of them his team has conceded 3 or more goals thats 17 % or 1 in 6 (5.8) games which means over the course of a 46 game league 1 season (not including cup games we can be expected to concede 3 or more goals about 8 times! Yet we have decided he is the one!

Does anyone at this club know anything about football?

I forgot he was previously at Southampton before he came to us.

So this will be 2 managers, 1 Goalkeeper, 2 defenders, 1 midfielder and a head scout we have had from Southampton in the last 9 years.

Careful

you’ll be accused of being on the board soon

It’s not what I was hoping for this appointment, but I agree entirely with what you said.

With the variety of options out there I think it’s fair to say we could have surely found a more promising prospect.

They absolutely should.

I'm not saying they should allow the fans to pick the manager.

There has to be an objective process that scores the candidate against a number of criteria - from playing style and philosophy to bringing through youth players and performance in the transfer market.  One of those criteria must be consideration of the relationship with the fans.

This club is broken.  It needs the board, the manager, the coaches, the players AND the fans to pull in the same direction.  I've never known such resistance to a managerial appointment before the bloke has stepped through the door.

The club are in full self-destruct mode and need the fans to get behind the decision making.

This is precisely the reason why we’re likely to go into administration and go bust.

Puel built an excellent team, he just had a very low ceiling in terms of what he could succeed with that team.

Martin is a twat with a good head of hair, and an attractive wife.

This is more like Peter Taylor but worse.

For what its worth I think Martin will probably get us out of league 1. Its probably the right way to go style wise (unfortunately) by not letting teams get any of the ball.

Past league 1 though I cant see it working and we return to the same short-sightedness weve had all along.

The club and Top and his lord Rudkin have doubled down on stupid, what’s the point of the Technical Director if we are still doing this sideways and backwards shit. This goes one of 2 ways, either Martin is fired up to restore his own career, builds a young squad and gets us playing ok or he absolutely shits the bed and we end up bottom of league 1.

The fans will still turn up in their thousands though.

Anyone who is anti Martin and still buys tickets is a twat

Relegations are not good, particularly to the third tier. But it was another opportunity to recognise that we've been on the wrong path, to rid ourselves of the elements holding us back, and have a bit of a reset. Again we've decided, no, it's everyone else who's wrong.

I guess Cardiff and Birmingham have had success with possession based football in league 1 recently. If he gets us back to mid table Champ in 3 years then that's probably success. That's very much the ceiling here though and the toxic atmosphere is only going to persist with Martin in charge.

There are actually intelligent people in the US administration.  But they place their standard of living above everything else.

That should be the case, but that presupposes that the board have an ounce of football and financial nous, and use their position to consider all the stats available before making a decision.

With KP we know that isn't the case and, sadly, many of the supporters have more relevant knowledge and acumen that those responsible for making the key decisions.

Here's just one example ... the decision makers have shown over the last few seasons that they think it a better strategy to pay peanuts for managers and then spend a fortune on garbage players rather than believing that getting the best manager in is the most important starting-off point.

In hindsight, beating Southampton 9-0 has been the worst thing that could've happened to us. Since then we've just decided to bring all their rubbish here.

I completely agree on lessons learned and the capability in the board room concerns me however the constant referring by fans to administration is misguided - if he was to put the club into administration he would be both giving up and writing off £m’s - Top will not do that willingly and he will need a reset financially without jeopardising his ownership which is something he feels passionately about - irrespective of his ability!

Puel ended up being a good appointment.

His football was boring with not enough end product but recruitment was pretty good and I think the move to possession football coupled with that recruitment is what gave Rodgers a really strong base.

Doubtful about Martin who seems to be up his own backside but who knows

Fans picking the manager is a bit extreme, but any club owner should take fan behaviour on board, and now days any sensible company would have someone trawling the internet, giving out surveys etc. to get a feel for the mood of their customer (fan) base.

If I remember right the chairman at the time told MoN some angry fans were outside, in this era, Top would just not care less.

Top just keeps repeating the same decisions whilst acting as if its some kind of reset.

think many forget the amount of good players he managed to bring in,

alot of the team rodgers had were Puel signings....

on martin, the more and more i read the more i feel its all going to go tits up.....unless hes actually had the balls to adapt his style when needed

but his possession based style dont fully work anymore

Heres a conspiracy theory for you, weve been arse licking Enzo for so long to maintain a good relationship and hes promised us to be a feeder club aslong as we carry on his style of play so thats why they went for russel martin and maximum man city loans a year
