Had the look of someone who didn't know he was a goal keeper. One decent stop to be fair but other than looked like the shit goalkeeper I remember watching Southampton have.

Danny Ward in disguise....and fear we go down if we continue to play him.

I don’t think we’ll go down this season. But we’re looking like this is the league for us for the forseeable.

When we signed him, my Soton season ticket pal said "horrible kicker, but does the rest well". Had a difficult afternoon today (as did the rest of our back line) - but I expect he'll settle. But just don't expect his kicking to improve...

He was awful.  No other word to describe his performance.  Just doesn't inspire any confidence in the defence.  Hos passing and kicking were generally woeful.

McCarthy looked every bit the back up keeper that he’s been for the vast majority of his long career. Shaky and indecisive with crosses and corners and slow and cumbersome with the ball at his feet, which is a surprise for a Martin team. At his age he isn’t going to get any better. He will make key errors and lose his place at some point as he has throughout his career. He got away with one massive key error today!

This. I think he was rushed back. I think he'll be okay at his level but isn't one for passing. He looked much happier booting it out.

I don't think he was as bad as others have made out. The goal was the defences fault, didn't react quick enough. He is certainly not as bad a Rab Douglas or Ward, I think the is reactionary to his passing mistakes.

He's not Mads, but he isn't Ward either. After a few games I think he'll be okay.

Has he not been signed because he can play out from the back? Literally the whole point.

Let's be honest he was signed cause he's mates with Martin. Anyone who's seen him play knows he's shite, should have stuck with Stolarczyk

My saints mates couldn't stop laughing when we signed him, but they thought getting Martin was an even worse decision

Rudkins got a saintsburys nectar card and can't help but not use it

Indeed. He's far from the weakest link in the side.

Stolarczyk in goal would have lost us that game.

Makes me laugh when people say drain the swamp when all we do is sign dead wood from other teams saying the same thing. McCarthy and Cullen are 2 for a start.

Bang on.

We have a giant swamp conveyor belt. Even when they fix some of their problems they'll likely add a bit, possibly even more in the process.

Another dire signing - again, we were warned of this. Stolarczyk isn't really good enough, but he's better than Begovic was, and he's better than this clown as well.

I’m one that defends most players longer than the majority of others, such as Daka and Thomas.

But the best way I could describe McCarthy is ‘past it and never really had it to start with’. Bang average in his prime and not well past that prime.

It’ll be a long season if he is first choice. That touch where he was closed down and it rebounded onto the bar was just awful. He will cost us a decent amount of goals I should think.

I think it’s because whilst we are falling down the leagues we insist on buying from teams above us, so inevitably we get their cast offs.

We should be buying upwardly mobile players from teams at, around, or below our level.

Those are players with something still to prove. Loaning from the prem is fine, but we shouldn’t buying late 20s/early 30s prem and champ cast offs, as we repeatedly do.

Our “strategy” is largely to buy players on their way down to add to a team on its way down.
