Striker Emil Riis Joins Leicester City
 

Emil Riis has become the latest addition to Leicester City’s attacking ranks after completing a move from Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City, subject to league approval.
 

The 28-year-old Danish forward links up with our Men’s First Team for the 2026/27 campaign, bringing a wealth of Championship experience following spells with the Robins and Preston North End.

He has signed a four-year contract and adds further options to Russell Martin’s squad, with Emil having finished his first season at Ashton Gate as the club’s leading scorer, netting 12 times across all competitions.

 

Speaking to LCFC.com, Emil said: “I’m really excited and can’t wait to get going. I think this will be great for me, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans and hopefully scoring goals. It’s a massive club with a very exciting project.

 

“I've played a lot of games in England so I hope I can bring experience to the team. I want to help the young lads we have and push them in the right direction.”

 

A former Denmark youth international, Emil developed in Randers’ academy before joining Derby County in 2015. He gained his first experience of senior football during a loan spell with Dutch side VVV-Venlo before returning to Randers in 2018.

 

He established himself in the Danish Superliga ahead of a move to Preston North End in October 2020, going on to score 46 goals in 186 appearances during five seasons at Deepdale.

 

A move to Bristol City followed in the summer of 2025, where he continued to add to his experience in the second tier and collected the club’s Golden Boot award at the end of the campaign.

 

On the international stage, Emil has represented Denmark at several youth levels, including Under-21s

People can say 4 years is fine but Bristol City only gave him a 3 year deal a year ago. We really rate ourselves on every transfer that they aren't going to possibly fail, despite the majority of them doing so. 

 

I think he'll be fine for this level and mid Champ but signings like this will never see us return to the PL, a tough task anyway I know.

4 years is likely to facilitate a lower salary for the new SCP rules as opposed to paying a larger salary over a 2 or 3 year contract. He'll have probably accepted this due to the job security it gives to him. Don't necessarily like it, but can see the rationale behind it.

I think it will be on low-ish wages. Secures his next 4 years in England and gets us a starting striker now, with a back-up role in the Championship (if we ever return!)

Did Riis have loads of options for first team football aside from us?

Would would you recommend we sign in Lg 1 that will help see us return to the PL ? Genuinely interested who's out there, it's not a dig!

Please people, do some research. Signing a player over 4 years can often be better financially for a club than over 2 years. 
 

See below as an example - 

 

For a football club, the key distinction is accounting vs. actual cash cost:

• Transfer fee: usually amortised over the contract length for accounting purposes. A £40m transfer over 4 years means £10m/year of amortisation, versus £20m/year over 2 years
• Resale value: a longer contract can protect the club because you don’t reach the final year with the player able to leave cheaply/free.

So best case, he has a good couple of seasons for us. We establish ourselves back in the Champ looking to go back to the PL and we sell him for a fairly modest fee as a 30 year old to a lower table Champ side and recoup some of the fee we’ve paid.

Either get criticised for signing players with no resale value, or criticised for signing players with excessive contracts.

 

I think we've all been accustomed to not being able to sell players due to massive wages. Riis is hopefully being brought in on normal wages, and he'd be more sellable during his contract than most of our 'assets'.

 

I say let's leave the drama at the door and welcome a new player to the club with some positivity.
