Watched The Banshees of Inisherin on Friday.

Thought it was great, but wasn't what I expected - the reviews I'd seen has suggested that it's rather more light hearted than it actually is.

I probably enjoyed it slightly less than the director's previous effort, 3 Billboards, but that's not a criticism as I thought that was amazing

I agree with your assessment - very good, but not at all what I expected.

I suppose it was partly comedy, in a way, but black comedy as black as you can imagine. That raises the question as to when black comedy becomes sufficiently painful to cease being funny/comedy.

This film certainly came close to that, as you couldn't avoid feeling for the characters, rather than laughing along, however ridiculous their predicament and their actions.

I thought "Banshees" was a good film, but saw another Irish-based film, "The Quiet Girl", around the same time - and thought that was absolutely outstanding. Really moving in a very understated way (and I wouldn't be distracted by it being partly in the Irish language, as it's a story that could be set in any country). Probably the best film I've seen since.......3 Billboards.

The cinematography was stunning (from spectacular images of seaside, skies & fireworks to mundane images of small objects & cinema interiors), the acting was great (both the leads and the secondary characters), the score was good, but.....

For me, major aspects of the story completely lacked credibility and/or worth:

- Why jam in so many different themes ("make the most of life", "cinema is great", mental illness, racism, age-disparity relationship) if it means you can't do justice to them - or if you have nothing to say about them?

- Some elements were naff stereotypes, lacking credibility: the seedy boss and his public exposure, the rioting neo-Nazi skinheads (though the racist old git in the queue was more credible)

- Did it say anything interesting about mental illness, racism or age-disparity relationships? If not, maybe that doesn't matter, but why bother addressing them?

- It introduced interesting characters (cinema staff, esp. the projectionist) and apparently significant characters (the mother & the girlfriend), but didn't develop them properly as characters with their own stories - frustrating

- Although the 2 leads acted well (especially Olivia Colman), their relationship was strangely passionless....though maybe that was intentional if, in different ways, they were both drifting and needing something to wake them up?

Funny enough, I did quite enjoy it, because the cinematography and acting was so great and I was interested in where the relationship would lead.....but enjoyed it despite what seemed like major flaws

Agree on everything you said, I was still able to enjoy it a lot for the same reasons you cited but the script is definitely an effort to cram in as many Oscar baiting storylines as possible, without doing justice to any of them. The portrayal of bipolar isn't very realistic, the racism just crops up whenever the film needs something to happen and the romance isn't treated as the inappropriate relationship it is given the huge age difference.

Ha! I contributed enough to the crowdfunding of this to be sent a copy of the DVD which I've never got round to watching, shamefully.

The album that preceded it, sort of soundtrack-but-isn't, is great. One of my favourite records, although my wife hates it as she took an irrational dislike to the voice of one of the female singers

Sick, the knew horror film from Kevin Williamson, very Scream-like set during the early days of covid, about 2 girls isolating being stalked by a killer during lockdown

Definitely my favourite film of that year. And certainly Waititi's best IMO.

Went to see Avatar 2 again, and loved it once more.

One question though, with all the trillions of dollars the humans must have spent getting to and from Pandora, from spaceships, construction equipment, weaponry and ammunition, personnel, food, research and development… and not a single one of them thought it might be a good idea to develop ARROW PROOF GLASS?!

She Said

Movie about the 2 New York Times reporters who broke the story about Harvey Weinstein, this kicking off the MeToo movement.

Thought it was okay.  Seemed more like a TV movie, than a theatrical release.

Id give it a 5/10

This weekend's viewing:

Shotgun Wedding

JLo, Stifler's Mom, Lenny Kravitz

A wedding at an exclusive Philippines island resort gets hijacked by pirates

Pixie

Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon), Ben Hardy (a Peter Beale off Eastenders, Roger Taylor in Bohemian Rhapsody), Colm Meaney (****ing everything)

Irish comedy centred around a young woman trying to avenge her mothers death, enlists a couple of misfits to hijack a drug deal between her step dad's local gang and some Catholic priests.

Both very enjoyable IMO. Jennifer Coolidge (Stifler's Mom) basically steals every scene she's in. The latter film might make you a bit uncomfortable seeing Alec Baldwin handle guns on screen.

The Witch: Subversion

Violent Korean action movie.

A teenage girl, who was the victim of experiments as a child, is suddenly forced to face who she is.

Really liked this and will be adding it to my collection.  8/10

Saw it on Prime.

Beast with Idris Elba.  Only an hour thirty, no messing about or undue padding just a nice silly slice of action/thriller that's easy to watch and done well. There's nothing you won't expect but it's fun to be along for the ride.
