Thought it was excellent

Already decided I'm gonna watch it when I get the chance, strangely I only became aware of it due to a Facebook club? where they have comic book, sci-fantasy characters facing off against each other.  This one was Jobu vs Rick from Rick n Morty lol the consensus was from those that knew both characters, they would get smashed and end the multiverse together lol

The Pale Blue Eye with Christian Slater, slow but decent mystery with a neat twist at the end

A good list there.  I've seen most of them and would pretty much accord with your rankings. Would stick an extra point on Top Gun and take most of the points off of the Dr Strange film which was total shit.

Couple I'd add on which I don't know if you've seen in Banshees of Inishiren which is now streaming and Aftersun, which in my view is comfortably the film of the year.

It'll make you cry though....

Banshees was thoroughly brilliant. I'd say Farrell's greatest performance. But the whole cast were superb. A sad film based on a simple premise.  Certainly gets you thinking.

I thought Empire of Light was very good. Not the most original script but a stunning cast, Roger Deakins on cinematography and Trent Reznor on the score. Was very surprised to see it got so slated.

It got me thinking... Why the hell would anyone write such a dull and dreary film?

Clearly at odds with Golden Globe judges. Farrell best actor, and Banshees wins best drama/comedy

Actually it won best comedy/musical.

Were they watching the same film? It was neither musical or particularly funny. Reminds me of when The Martian won a GG in the comedy category.

Also just watched the pale blue eye on Netflix. Slow film, am a big fan of poe myself and found his involvement to be more of a let's put the name in it for a bit of clout rather than it lend anything to the story. But beyond that and a few nitpicks thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. Infinitely more likeable than the other recent Netflix mystery film, knives out: glass onion. Sombre film, well shot, the 2 leading performances particularly exceptional. Harrowing in places. Enjoyed the ending. 8/10

Same here - it's a very well made film, very well set film and was a decent couple of hours. It's not amazing by any stretch but I enjoyed watching it

Watched The Banshees of Inisherin on Friday.

Thought it was great, but wasn't what I expected - the reviews I'd seen has suggested that it's rather more light hearted than it actually is.

I probably enjoyed it slightly less than the director's previous effort, 3 Billboards, but that's not a criticism as I thought that was amazing

Had a horror film binge yesterday.

Barbarian on Disney+, been following Zach Cregger ever since his comedy in WKUK years ago. Didn't dissappoint. Fun, bonkers flick.

The Menu. Loved it, one of the best comedy horrors I've seen in ages.

Men. Fan of Alex Garland in general but this missed the mark for me. Really nicely shot but the last 15 minutes were just plain weird. The allegories got lost and it dissappeared up its own arse quite a bit.

The cinematography was stunning (from spectacular images of seaside, skies & fireworks to mundane images of small objects & cinema interiors), the acting was great (both the leads and the secondary characters), the score was good, but.....

For me, major aspects of the story completely lacked credibility and/or worth:

- Why jam in so many different themes ("make the most of life", "cinema is great", mental illness, racism, age-disparity relationship) if it means you can't do justice to them - or if you have nothing to say about them?

- Some elements were naff stereotypes, lacking credibility: the seedy boss and his public exposure, the rioting neo-Nazi skinheads (though the racist old git in the queue was more credible)

- Did it say anything interesting about mental illness, racism or age-disparity relationships? If not, maybe that doesn't matter, but why bother addressing them?

- It introduced interesting characters (cinema staff, esp. the projectionist) and apparently significant characters (the mother & the girlfriend), but didn't develop them properly as characters with their own stories - frustrating

- Although the 2 leads acted well (especially Olivia Colman), their relationship was strangely passionless....though maybe that was intentional if, in different ways, they were both drifting and needing something to wake them up?

Funny enough, I did quite enjoy it, because the cinematography and acting was so great and I was interested in where the relationship would lead.....but enjoyed it despite what seemed like major flaws
