In the UK development work is very underpaid, most NGOs are full of people who went to Oxford and Cambridge, very well meaning people who can afford to work for very little, but on the other hand, coming from a life of privilege, what do they really know about the world? I've never worked in the UK for a 'charity' or NGO, but most of my career has been working with American or now UN ones, because they pay better and I can make a career of it. I doubt I'll be back in the UK any time soon. But if I did only consultants, i.e. the private sector, can match what I earn now.
