Didn't the vardy thread get closed because it was a non issue that Jamie and shinji had sorted out? Why is it still going here, everyone is never going to agree so it's pointless

In fairness it is best to leave it, but I will say just because Shinji and Jamie are fine over it doesn't change the incident at all really.

You're conflating 'nobody' being offended with 'you' not being offended. It's not up to you or I to determine what is or isn't offensive to a particular person unless we're the subject of the prejudice.

I think there is such a thing as over sensitivity. Of course there is. But Vardy's use of 'Jap' was undeniably racist and it's right that he's apologised. It's not the most racist thing ever, but insidious casual racism should be challenge just as much as any other form.

Whether something is racist isn't defined by whether somebody was offended, it is defined by the intention of the person using a term. This has to be the case as true racism is about the users feelings towards a race or culture.

I agree there is more too it but everyone arguing on here is not helping anything. It was stupid but it's not a sackable offence and he has apologised let's just move on.

To be fair the first part of your call was sensible .... then you let Stringer make you sound apologetic and just strengthened his agenda against Jamie. 

 

Seriously if anyone thinks that calling someone a Jap, Brit, Ozzie, Scot, Yank, is racist they should grow a thicker skin (regardless of colour) because it just isn't.

 

I don't agree with that right now, but two days ago I'd have fully agreed with you and that's kind of my point here - is it really such common knowledge that the term 'Jap' is deemed to be racist?

 

Vardy was undoubtedly a twat but the race element is being over-played for me.

 

Stringer's just a shit-stirrer anyway. His true colours were shown last season. He's got the mentality of a tabloid writer.

Yes, to an extent, but people can be unwittingly racist. I.E. old people not knowing that 'coloured' is offensive.

Having read the "Vardy" thread and listened to the moan-in here are my views.

 

1) The level of education on this forum is shocking with some idiotic comments being thrown around.

2) Nobody has mentioned the issues of context, power and time as these will all impact upon whether a particular term can been deemed as racist or not (such terms are fluid not static).

3) I have no doubt that Vardy is not racist (whatever this means) but rather, and like with so many comments on this forum, that his lack of education and an inability to control or express his emotions in a socially acceptable manner, has created this situation (alcohol, status, age etc. just exacerbate things).

4) Last night Stringer used the term "Far East" which many now regard as Eurocentric, Ethnocentric and tinged with colonial undertones. Again, is Stringer a racist? No, it is a matter of education and awareness.

5) It is no accident that most members of far-right political movements are uneducated and there are studies that show this correlation.

 

This will be my last post on the forum as I am tired of the undercurrent of stupidity when dealing with issues of race (Which idiot proudly declared that they use the term "chinky" when ordering food at their local Chinese restaurant? Go to a bar in Shanghai and see how far that term gets you!!).

 

The Thai incident was a real eye-opener and now the same old people with their veiled bigotry and linear nonsensical logic strike again.

Exactly, I have worked for a Japanese company for over 18 years and visit regularly.  The MD of our European operation would regularly ask if we were going out for 'JapCrap' for dinner when we visited, the people who employed him saw this as bad manners and poor education but didn't feel he was being racist, just stupid.

the definitely spoke to him in pre season but I didn't hear anyone after the Sunderland game and that was before he tried to have Vardy hung

 

Geoff Peters posted last week sometime they are still not talking to him.

 

Apparently they thought they were obliged to speak to him during pre-season - I don't know why the thought that but anyway when they found out they weren't they stopped talking to him again.

 

Then the way he handled the Vardy situation I don't think they'll be speaking to him anytime soon.
