Robin JD Popley Posted 13 January 2015 Posted 13 January 2015 We could do a lot worse than looking at George Friend for a LB. He'd cost a few million mind but he's a very good player. George Friend. Was on loan at my hometown club in Devon when he was a kid and had Something special then. He's only 27 which isn't too old Who's the chap who plays for Boro? He's having a great season for them. BEEN SAYING THIS FOR WEEKS!!!!! Still in his 20s, a class act. Bet he would join if we put in a good enough offer to Boro!
Haydos Posted 13 January 2015 Posted 13 January 2015 Ah, fair enough. Yeah can't blame him but they got him for a steal.

kingfox Posted 13 January 2015 Posted 13 January 2015 He isn't good enough to play left-back, hence why Spurs decided to put him back at RB and sign Ben Davies. I'd have him back any day, but only as an out and out RB. Just because he has had to play left-back before, it doesn't mean he is good in that position.

"I am not going to lie - I am a right-back. That is the position I want to play in, but it has been difficult with Kyle Walker doing so well." http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11675/9186724/kyle-naughton-admits-he-may-have-to-leave-tottenham-this-summer
Guest Posted 13 January 2015 Posted 13 January 2015 We should've gone in harder with more intent. Sounds like We should have sent Gally to the negotiation.
deep blue Posted 13 January 2015 Posted 13 January 2015 We should've gone in harder with more intent. I'm inclined to suspect we didn't go in hard and quickly enough to snap up cresswell. If so - robinson's fault?
JJS84 Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Just fcukin lob Ben Chilwell in the team Yeah I hear that the lads got some talent. Coming up to 18 to soon? If he good enough he's old enough.
Unabomber Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Yeah I hear that the lads got some talent. Coming up to 18 to soon? If he good enough he's only enough. And only enough is not enough atm unfortunately.

He moved seamlessly into the dev team's last game, got rave reviews, well regarded, apparently. Could it be that Pearson is holding fire on the LB position this season, hoping Chilwell could step up next season? As someone has already pointed out, we have current backup solutions in Schlupp and De Laet. When you look how Southampton are willing to throw in their best academy products, why can't we?
Lesta2014 Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 Been equally as impressed with elder when I've watched him at left back! Reads the game well, you never know how the youngsters will get on unless given game time.
ealingfox Posted 14 January 2015 Posted 14 January 2015 When you look how Southampton are willing to throw in their best academy products, why can't we? In the last 10-odd years Southampton's Academy has produced Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. We've produced Joe Mattock and Chris O'Grady. You can see why they might have slightly more faith in the fruits of theirs.

I'm not saying that these players are conparable to Southampton's best prospects, but by ignoring some of our better graduates and highlighting the the poorer ones, you do our setup a disservice. We've actually got a fairly decent record in terms of academy prospects over the last few years. Anyway, maybe there is a Bale or a Chamberlain or a Walcott in our ranks - we won't know unless we play them.
Babylon Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 Anyway, maybe there is a Bale or a Chamberlain or a Walcott in our ranks - we won't know unless we play them. Do people think Saints weren't aware of the quality of these players BEFORE they put them in the squad, or were they in the squad because they were aware of their quality? It's more likely to be the latter.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 15 January 2015 Posted 15 January 2015 Chilwell is no way near ready for first team yet. He's only just started to play for the development side, think people are getting far to carried away.

I didn't say "yet", but suggested that by next august he might have come on enough to be given a go. And for all of the awareness of the coaching staff, I suspect it's still possible for them still to be pleasantly surprised by the extent to which the odd player manages to step up. One thing for sure - the only way to find out is to give them a go.

Thought Harry Panatiloyou (I know, useless effort) was supposed to be our next big 'flair' player. Disappointing he obviously hasn't developed the way we thought he would. Edit: Naughton - Would be a good signing actually. Not looked great at Spurs (a club vying for a top 4 place) but would look a much better player amongst a team with far different aspirations.
