SURVIVAL - 20 points in 12 games

Recommended Posts

The only result that's certain is a defeat to West Ham.... There's the chance of at least a point from all the others and any maybe the odd win

Why? Have i missed something

Our best hope is that we go in a bit of a run and everybody else stumbles a bit so we only need to score in the low 30's to stay up. But I don't see it happening. Championship here we come I am afraid :/ .

Posted

I can't see us getting near 38 points, but I can't see the likes of QPR, Hull and Burnley getting there either.

We just have to take whatever is going, stop making errors, get a few favourable refs for a change and hope that we get enough points for 17th.

Any of the teams below Everton could go down this season.

All it takes is teams to lose a few games and they could end up bottom of the league.

Would look so much better if we had taken the 3 points at Goodison but we still are in with a shout.

Man City draw (19)

Hull win (22)

Tottenham win (25)

West Ham win (28)

West Brom win (31)

Swansea win (34)

Burnley win (37)

Chelsea draw (38)

Newcastle win (41)

Southampton win (44)

Sunderland win (47)

QPR win (50)

Even if we do half as good as that, we will stay up!

We have been the better team in the majority of games we have played, hardly anyone can believe we are bottom of the league based on the performances we have put in.

We could have beat Everton, Arsenal, Palace, Stoke, Liverpool, Spurs, Man City, Villa, QPR, Sunderland, West Brom, Newcastle and so on... Then things would be a lot different.

Pearson has got it right in most games and people are just being over critical based on our position in the league, if we had the rub of the green in half the games we should have won we would be mid table at least.

Lets hope we get a bit of luck in the remainder of the season.

lol slightly optimistic there, so we won't lose another game for the rest of the season.....

The situation we find ourselves in is brought about from our results against the lower teams. We've shot ourselves in the foot by dropping points all over the place against relegation rivals. Take the 2 most recent league games; a point at Goodison Park would have been a good point if we had ground out a win at home to Crystal Palace but alas we haven't done that all season so we will struggle.

On predicting the results you can be your mortgage any progress we may or may not make will be hindered in a similar way; a great point/win over a top side and then pissing points away in a more winnable game like Hull or Newcastle at home.

It'd take a miracle for us to stay up now, already made an absolute mess of this season as it is.

Hull at home for example will be another which we'll expect to take points from, but these are the ones we've been losing, due to the ongoing inept tactics by our manager.

They will know that avoiding defeat to us will make it almost impossible for us to catch them. expect them to park the bus and expect us to be unable to get past it.

Momentum and confidence can do funny things to a team. Pick up 2 wins on the bounce and we'll likely be within touching distance again. Stranger things have happened in football. 3 wins would all but half the total we require to survive. The problem is falling on the right side of a 1 goal win, which this season we have struggled really badly with doing. Its a very tough ask but not beyond our reach.

Couldnt have said it beter myself. Momentum is such a huge factor not only in football but in all sports. You can almost touch the momentum in some tennis matches - a very subtle thing. Like you say all it takes is falling on the right side of a 1 goal win - i.e if we'd have kept out that 2nd everton goal maybe that would've tipped the scales just enough to create a little extra self belief and confidence. Saying that we'd probably get it hounded out of us in the next game against man city.

Staggering post, just what planet are you living on???

Quite hard to get momentum when we've got 10 days between matches

It's often said if you're winning you can't wait to get back out there and do it all over again, or if you suffer a defeat, particularly close ones like we do, teams can't wait to get back out there to put it right

I wonder if the stop/start nature of this league and routine change is something extra that promoted teams have to get to grips with

We'll never get to 38 but personally I'd be surprised if any of Hull, QPR, Burnley or Villa got to 38 either. In fact 38 is what I'm expecting the likes of Sunderland and West Brom to get.

I am confident 35 will be enough and we've still got probably 10 games we could conceivably win. That said I can't see us getting there - we just give up too many poor goals.

Out of interest, have you seen the games that West Brom have to play? For instance, their last five are Liverpool (H), Man U (A), Newcastle (A), Chelsea (H) and Arsenal (A). They will probably do OK, but I don't see them getting 38 points - and if we beat them on 11 April (more likely to be a draw, I think) - they might struggle.

Posted

If there is ever a fixture list designed for a great escape its our end of the season.

If we had just another three points already id be confident but unfortunately think we've left it too late

Posted

I just can't see us suddenly hitting the kind of form that will put us beyond our rivals. We are the ones who have to do the catching up, and looking at the way we have been losing games against mediocre opposition, our chances appear to be very slim, though not impossible

That'll do me, and I hope you are right: but it means getting the same number of points in the remaining 12 games as we have in the previous 26. I am arguably the biggest optimist on FT, but still...

The only thing that keeps me going is that there are at least four or five other teams down there who are much worse than we are. QPR are a rabble, Burnley have overplayed their luck, Villa are not a team (and, personally, I don't rate Sherwood as a motivator), Sunderland and Hull are dire, and West Brom have a really difficult run-in. We will know whether we stand a chance by the end of March, I think.
