Carl the Llama Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 To the OP, have any of the arguments made in this thread convinced you that there may have been a logic to the idea that playing a formation with 3 centre backs could potentially improve the fortunes of a team currently haemorrhaging goals but who only recently got clean sheets aplenty with mostly the same players in the suggested formation? It never had anything to do with Nigel. The fact that you felt the need to bring him up into a debate ostensibly about the merits of formations says it all about your pathetic motivations.
Merging Cultures Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Careful now, one clean sheet doesn't mean the defence is sorted. It certainly has looked better since Simpson and Fuchs have come in. But given how many goals we have let in, I would still like to see 3 at the back at some point. Unless, we do now keep more clean sheets.

KP Fox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 because it's a personal preference we looked more defensively sure with it with Huth Wes & Wasyl as a 3, we were also much better at defending set pieces with it, a big weakness I'd rather look attackingly frightening as we doing right now!
Jimmy Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I'd rather look attackingly frightening as we doing right now! We did, Albrighton RWB Fuchs/Schlupp LWB and Mahrez behind 2 strikers
Carl the Llama Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Eh? Apologies if I'm wrong but that's how it reads to me when you needlessly jam NP into the end of your sentence in the op. Either way you don't have much of a point, that should be clear by now. It's good that we've looked a bit more solid at the back of late but I don't see how you can conclude that this improvement invalidates the perfectly sound point of view that a 3-5-2 would see us concede less goals. If we had tried it and subsequently failed to show any improvement or indeed declined a bit then you might have reason to gloat but it's all still hypothetical. As things stand I would still like to see it trotted out against more dangerous outfits, especially away from home. A clean sheet against Newcastle hardly proves we've solved our frailty issues. Am I particularly unhappy with the formation we currently use? Why should I be?

I have great respect for NP so still nor sure what the comment means.
Babylon Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 We've not conceded in open play since Arsenal 6 games ago. They have all been pennos and corners. The switch to more defensive full backs has made a massive difference.
dayday Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Where are they now? It seems that the talk for the first 6-8 games despite our great start was for a return to the 3-4-3 formation brought in by NP. Interesting now we have climbed to the top those guys do not seem to be posting it anymore.? Does this mean all those people are now accepting that CR knows more than them?! Come on guys...come back and admit who you are and give your view now I just like the fact we are so comfortable playing either formation.
mozartfox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 To be fair, in Simpson and Fuchs we appear to have a reasonable pair of full backs now, which are for sure less effective offensively but more effective defensively. Having said that, Simpson created the third goal on Saturday. I think one quicker more mobile CB would not go a miss. Huth is going to get red carded or suspended at some stage soon. Just a shame that Liam has completely lost his way.

HighPeakFox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 This really is a 'must win' thread Seriously, although I can see why you might start such a thread, what is to be gained in attempting goading of an entirely reasonable point of view? I realise that is the modus operandi of most of our media now, but it's not big and it's not clever.
Viva Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 We weren't top 2 months ago were we? You ****ing retard. What do you think of our owners now? I remember you absolutely slating them. You got it a bit wrong didn't you? Childish I know getting back at Oxide, but I just can't resist!
Ashley Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Was 3-5-2 but who gives a shit if we are winning in all honesty
mozartfox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Benny is pretty quick and mobile don't you think ? I was very impressed with him vs West Ham in the cup . Quick yes, but needs to stop trying to get booked the minute he is on the pitch.
Fox92 Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 We've actually got proper full backs this season, no need for a 343/532.
Finnegan Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I hate these threads. All it'll take is we lose a few games and there'll be some other smug willy puller starting an equally shit thread about where are all the 442 boys now. Just grow the **** up and enjoy winning regardless.
deep blue Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Simpson obviously... 4-4-2 is working brilliantly, but 3-4-3 was excellent for us at the end of last season, so calling for it earlier in the season was perfectly reasonable, and it's still a perfectly viable alternative now, I dare say Claudio might try it against some of the bigger sides in the next month to provide that extra bit of steel against the likes of Aguero. This is my feeling. The reason why this has dropped off the radar? Obviously, our league position sweeps many little concerns under the carpet, but there is another reason. Several people were of my mind, because we fixed our defensive frailty last season by playing 3 at the back. This season we started with a flat back 4 and immediately started to leak goals again. On the face of it, reverting to 3 at the back was the obvious and reasonable solution. But fair play to Ranieri. Over the last few weeks there has been a noticeable steadying up of our defence. Major factors have been the emergence of Fuchs and the rebirth of Simpson as a steady LB (the latter has taken almost all of us by surprise). I never thought that we would be able to make a reliable defence out of 4-4-2 with our defenders, so that's brilliant. I might also say that the qualities that Ranieri has brought to the table have been much more and better than I had ever dared to hope.
Kitchandro Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Do you mean 3-5-2? Oh and I'm still here by the way. There's still an argument to play such a formation, it's just that we're currently playing well with a different one. What an idiotic thread.
AKCJ Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 What do you think of our owners now? I remember you absolutely slating them. You got it a bit wrong didn't you? Childish I know getting back at Oxide, but I just can't resist! It's not childish. It's toddlerish. In fact it's infantish. No, actually it's spermmeetstheeggish. Get a ****ing grip.
blue army 1988 Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I don't know about a different formation but we need to stop leaking goals
Izzy Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I don't know about a different formation but we need to stop leaking goals But that's the thing, we're not really 'leaking' goals at the moment are we? We've conceded three in the last four PL games I think, so not sure that equates to leaking goals? As Fuchs said on his twitter, we're the #cleansheetarmy
Viva Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 It's not childish. It's toddlerish. In fact it's infantish. No, actually it's spermmeetstheeggish. Get a ****ing grip. Keep your hair on. Why are you getting so wound up?
4ever and ever Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I don't know about a different formation but we need to stop leaking goals Correct me if I am wrong but I dont think we have conceded a goal in open play since the Arsenal game in September!

Come on guys...come back and admit who you are and give your view now Apart from it's 3-5-2, I still prefer the formation to 4-4-2 as we look far much more solid than we have done. Do I think we'd get the results we have done with 3-5-2 that we have under 4-4-2? Yes is the short of it.
