VLC86 Posted 22 August 2016 Share Posted 22 August 2016 Would love a trip to Lyon, Went there for France 98 and can remember it being pretty decent. Obviously new stadium but nice city. Seriously feels like my life in on hold until this draw Was going to book a city break for January but no point before the draw as I will be pissed off If I go to the same place again, 5 days left off work and need them for this. I am going to prime my boss for a text message holiday request at 6.15 on Thursday and pending a favourable reply a resignation letter at 6.18. davieG Posted 22 August 2016 Share Posted 22 August 2016 Who could Leicester City play in the Champions League group stage? By JBlackwell | Posted: August 22, 2016 0 COMMENTS 1 SHARES Steve Welsh/Getty Images image: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/Article/images/29643432/15292350-large.jpg Atletico Madrid or Basel? Celtic or Besiktas? Who could City face in the Champions League? Comments (0) Leicester City will discover the destinations of their European tour this week as the draw for the group stages of the Champions League takes place. On Thursday evening, at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, a mix of Uefa officials and former Champions League stars will delve into those large glass bowls and reveal the three sides City will face during their debut campaign in the continent's premier competition. image: http://tag-dyn.omnitagjs.com/fo-dyn/native/preview/image? image: http://fo-static.omnitagjs.com/fo-static/native/images/info-blue.png image: http://fo-api.omnitagjs.com/fo-api/pixel?event_kind=IMPRESSION&attempt=0589b6ecf32d8d6225ddf256057fdc23&campaign=79122a850c04ff7bcd49bd5c3ea1ef8a But where could City be heading? While the second legs of the 10 play-off round fixtures are not completed until Wednesday evening, the bookmakers' odds provide an indication as to which sides are best placed to reach this season's group stage. If the play-off round favourites fulfil their expectations, the four Pots will be (* indicates club are still competing in the play-off round): http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/binaries/Champions League pots5.jpg http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/binaries/Champions League pots5.jpg image: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/binaries/Champions League pots5.jpg City, as one of the winners of Europe's top seven-ranked leagues, join Champions League holders Real Madrid in Pot 1. This rules out clashes against the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus until the knockout rounds, should City make it that far. City's group will be made up of one club from each Pot, although sides from the same association cannot meet, so Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City are also excluded from their list of prospective opponents. Here are a few potential draws to whet the appetite/fill City with dread: Easiest: Basel, Club Brugge, Ludogorets Razgrad Given only Europe's elite make up the 32 teams in the Champions League group stage, it seems ill-advised to suggest there is an 'easiest' group. However, if City draw these three sides, they will be confident of progression to the knockout stages. Basel stand out as the weakest side in Pot 2. Although they have plenty of Champions League experience and are about to compete in their seventh consecutive campaign, the Swiss champions have only reached the knockout stages twice in the previous six years, losing in the round-of-16 both times. Simon Hofmann/Getty Images image: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/binaries/Basel - Simon Hofmann - web.jpg Club Brugge saw off league heavyweights Anderlecht and reigning champions Gent to become Belgian title-winners for first time in 11 years, but they have already slipped to two surprise defeats this campaign. Ludogorets have now won five straight Bulgarian league titles, but have featured in the Champions League group stage just once, losing four of their six fixtures. Toughest: Atletico Madrid, Sporting Lisbon, Roma With one La Liga title and two Champions League runners-up medals over the past three seasons, Diego Simeone has transformed Atletico into a super-club that rank alongside Barcelona, Bayern Munich and city rivals Real as the leading contenders for the European crown. Sporting finished the last Portuguese league season with a record of 27 wins, five draws and just two losses. But, one of those defeats came against Benfica, and despite their excellent record, Sporting ended up second to their crosstown rivals. Now entering their second season under Jorge Jesus, Sporting could be a force in the Champions League this season. Miguel Riopa/AFP/Getty Images image: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/binaries/Islam Slimani - Miguel Riopa - web.jpg Sporting Lisbon's Islam Slimani, linked with a move to City this summer Roma have finished in Italy's top three for the past three seasons and reached the knockout stages of the Champions League last term, losing to eventual winners Real Madrid in the round-of-16. Nearest: Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge, Celtic Midweek jaunts across Europe could affect City's league form, with Premier League managers always quick to discuss the tolls of travelling and jetlag on their players. So, as far as the Premier League is concerned, Champions League away days to nearby cities would be ideal. Trips to Leverkusen, Bruges and Glasgow would, as the crow flies, total a 1,668-mile round journey for City, which is less than half the way to New York City. Furthest away: Napoli, Dynamo Kiev, Besiktas Fellow Champions League debutants FC Rostov, the Leicester City of Russia as they have been dubbed, would provide the single longest journey of the Champions League group stage should they defeat Ajax in their play-off. Epsilon/Getty Images image: http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276308/binaries/Sardar Azmoun - Epsilon - web.jpg FC Rostov striker Sardar Azmoun was the 'Russian Leicester City's' top scorer last season But, because of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine, Uefa rules forbid Russian teams meeting Ukrainian teams, so Rostov would not feature in a 'furthest-away' group. City would rack up 8,134 miles travelling to Naples, Kiev, Istanbul and back. 'There's history there': Atletico Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, Monaco City have played eight games in Uefa competitions previously and four of them have come against Atletico. City are yet to beat the Spanish side, drawing 1-1 and losing 2-0 over a two-legged affair in the 1961-62 European Cup Winners' Cup, before two defeats in the 1997-98 Uefa Cup. City fans will likely remember the most recent clash with Atletico, when they were denied several penalties and Garry Parker was sent off for taking a free-kick too quickly. The refereeing display saw Martin O'Neill declare the match "one we couldn't win". Due to their inexperience in Europe, City have not played any of the other sides likely to be in this year's group stage, but in PSV, City would meet a former European Cup winner, while a tie with Monaco would see Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri take on the club he left just two years ago.
