Looks like there'll probably only be 1-2 newcomers at the World Cup finals: Iceland, and possibly Panama.

One or two potential African debutants have a mathematical chance - Burkina Faso/Cape Verde, DR Congo (if we ignore Zaire 1974) - but are unlikely to make it.

 

Looks like there'll be a few who haven't made the finals often or for a while, though: Egypt, probably Senegal, possibly Norn Iron, Peru...

The Aussies really have had a lucky draw.  That whole group was poor and panama were 4th out of 6, the fact they even have a chance at qualifying seems unfair especially given that Slovakia came 2nd out of 6th and wont even have a play off spot.

Panama was an absolute disaster on Friday night. Then their coach went on a rant trashing his players, then got into it with the press before Felipe Baloy called a journalist a pendejo; and that was only what was recorded on camera. lol

 

I’ll take 0-0 for USA at T&T tonight on a pitch that more closely resembles a marsh if you offer it to me, no questions asked. There will be shenanigans all across the confederation tonight, but I’m sure the refs can at the very least make sure this happens.

Friday did not reflect Panama at all. They're a team from a small nation that bunkers and counter-attacks with some effectiveness, Their 3 previous qualifying games against US and Mexico all ended in draws (0-0, 1-1, 1-1). When they sit behind the ball, they're very frustrating to break down. Their centerbacks do a good job of defending crosses and corners. They score off of set pieces. They're essentially a shit central american version of West Brom.

 

You don't understand the nightmare that is CONCACAF qualifying. It's not tough because the other nations have talented, technically skilled players. It's tough because of the environment. The the officiating is at most, dubious. The opposition repeatedly commit fouls that are worthy of a red card, without ever being shown even a yellow. 

 

Away the pitch is generally a disaster. Take a look at the US practicing in Trinidad & Tobago. Yes, that is the field they will be playing on tonight, completely flooded less than 24 hours ago. Try stringing together a couple passes on these bumpy, soggy pitches.

When you're playing away in CONCACAF, the supporters will find out where the visiting team is staying, pull fire alarms, play loud music outside the hotel, and generally do not allow your players to sleep during the duration of their visit. They'll shine lazer pointers in the eyes of the goalkeeper, throw beer bottles, trash, batteries, etc. at players who are taking a corner. It's like being surrounded by Spanish speaking Millwall fans. 

 

CONCACAF opponents do not raise up to your level of play, they bring you down to theirs. So that, is what Australia has to look forward to. If they defeat Panama/Honduras at home in the first leg handily, they'll probably be fine. But if you have to go into that environment looking to win a game, good luck lol  The US and Mexico regularly reach the round of 16 in the world cup, and even we don't beat these opponents away.

Serves them right, and the national (gutter) press also. Overhyped this Swiss team to the extreme.

 

Would be quite the dramatic finale - imagine us losing out on the World Cup in Russia after failing in the playoffs... And that with nine wins from our first nine matches in the qualification process! lol

 

Playoffs will be horrible.

Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Italy, Ireland all tough opposition.

And Northern Ireland shouldn't be underestimated, either.

Well you’ll avoid Croatia, Denmark and Italy as they, like Switzerland, are seeded :)

I was really disappointed with Swiss tonight. Expected much more, don't wanna sound too harsh but they looked clueless going forward. Don't know what their game plan was? 

 

Really you should have just put ten men behind the ball and asked us to break you down.

Would love to stay up and follow developments in the Central and South American qualifying groups tonight, but too much to do tomorrow.

 

I expect to wake up to hear about all the melodrama:

- at least one side completely imploding; 

- a 20-man brawl;

- at least 4 red cards; 

- at least 2 massively controversial refereeing decisions;

- at least 3 goals in injury time;

- a pitch invasion

 

I reckon....

CONCACAF: USA will snaffle the final automatic spot and Panama will hold off Honduras to make the play-off

South America: I reckon Chile & Peru might be the losers in the game of musical chairs: Uruguay to ease through, Argentina to pull-off a last-gasp win in Ecuador, Colombia to get a draw in Peru, Paraguay to beat Venezuela to make the play-off v. the Kiwis, while the Chileans and Peruvians are left face-down on the pitch..... but what do I know?
