You are in football to win trophies.

And that's one of them gone already.

All the rest is debate and deflection from the fact that we are out one cup already.

Am I bothered about this cup? Yes. I'd have liked to have beat them last night for sure.

Midfield looks too thin. In fact, the squad does in some areas.

Agreed.

Add to to that apart from another Wes howler for the Cahill goal we were good value for a 2-0 HT lead.

I have not read the whole thread but I thought Grey behind tripped in the area was a stonewall penalty?

Absolutely nailed on. Foot taken and a bit of a nudge in the back. The challenge wasn't disimiliar to the Musa shout vs arsenal everyone was apoplectic about.

Looked like we could have had one just before the first goal when Musa went down - wrong and to see clearly - tripped or slipped for anyone in the family stand.

I went ballistic at Musa last night, I hope they make him watch the DVD and explain himself. His ridiculous attempt at a back heel in his own half gave Chelsea one last attack in the first half unnecessarily. We had fought hard to win the ball back, it's a couple of minutes to half time, just keep it simple and see it through to the break. At the time I declared "Cloughy would sub you for doing that" (something I once witnessed in a Forest match) and sure enough it leads to us conceding a goal at a crucial point of the game. All too often after long spells without the ball we'd eventually win it only to see it come straight back again often courtesy of a failed flick or heavy touch from Musa. Last season our efficiency on the break was key, every ball came off, every decision was the best decision possible, with Musa there's too many touches, not enough pure simplicity, an over eagerness where things fail to come off time and time again, sometimes you need to mix it up and try the simple thing that is guaranteed to keep possession rather than selfishly risk putting the hardworking defence and midfield back under pressure without a break. However I thought if Morgans "foul" against West Ham last season was a penalty then Cahill pushing Musa in the back with both hands is surely one too. And as for Schlupp..........

Yes Musa looks naive.

Hes quick, but not seen much else in his game to justify the £16m price tag.

It's not that he's not scored in a competitive game (which would mitigate) but more his decision making seems almost juvenile at times a la Schlupp, and that's not good.

I think what last night shows is that the sharpness needed to play first team football can't just be turned on like a tap.

Oh, and Jeff looked unfit, so no surprise he really looked miles off it.

To be fair the atmosphere in sk1 last night was brilliant the entire match. Should there not have been a stone wall pen for us though?

Not too disappointed with going out of the cup but the manner of the defeat after being 2-0 up is a worry. You could tell by the players faces (Mainly Shinji, Wes and Drinky) that they were pissed off. Individual mistakes and poor game management cost us. The main nnegative is DD and Wes playing 120 mins for me, very strange

Jeff didn't look unfit... he looked completely incapable. His pace and sharpness was the one thing he had going for him.

But there in lies the problem, Jeff joined our academy at a time when they were looking for 100m sprinters they could turn into footballers (i've posted about this in the U21 thread)

He's the latest in a long line of triers at this club who just aren't going to make it, we should have cut him loose in August, and if we had Kapustka would be getting a look in.

Perpspective seems to be a good word to throw around now. I don't think we learned an awful lot that we didn't know last night, it merely confirmed some concerns I have:

- Wes is not as good a defender without Huth organising

- Chilwell is technically a good player but positionally struggles (not ready yet for me, but could learn quickly)

- Schlupp was Schlupp although harsh to write him off as I don't think he's fit

- Wasyl's age is catching up with him

- King was King, few bright moments but not a ball winner and he's never going to grab the game by the scruff of the neck like Drinky can

- Musa is very quick but not great on the ball, still young though which I think people forget

- Zieler is a very able back up to Kasper, the best no 2 we've had in a long time

- Shinji is a useful squad player and when he plays like he did last night he's great, but too often he has games like he had against Liverpool.

Overall there are a couple of areas we're short on, which I think people would agree:

- Midfield although we have 2 injured (although not sure James will ever be fit again)

- Defense, a new cb is needed to challenge Huth and Morgan, Hernandez is a useful squad player to fill in at cb or rb but not quite there. If we can find a Huth that is 10 years younger than would be great!

Personally whilst it's frustrating to be out, I'm not too disappointed, we could do without the extra game coming up to be honest.

Last night was frustrating, not because we were knocked out, but because we needlessly played three first-teamers for 120 mins.

I don't think we should be too hard on some of the players last night. This happens every time we make a lot of changes and give players a chance that haven't played much for a long time. They are always going to be rusty.

My big concerns was how slow King looked, which is odd as he's had game-time so far this season, and how low in depth we are in the CM and CB positions. Premier League champions with money to spend and the extra challenge of Champions League games, yet we only have three CB's that we trust and only 4 CM's. I fear that failing in the transfer window could come back to haunt us.

Some of the knee jerk reactions and over the top comments in this forum are both laughable and quite frankly embarrasing.  Rules of the competition state you cannot play a team of reserves hence why the likes of Drinkwater, Simpson and Morgan all started.  We were playing Chelsea for gawds sake not Chesterfield and unlike us they do not have the distraction as some on here would say, of European competition this season.

At the end of 90 minutes we drew 2 2 with Chelsea at home.  Our reserves that is.  At the time of full time they had the likes of Hazard, Costa, Fabregas, Matic, Cahill on the pitch all whom cost considerably more than the whole of our team.  We were also down to ten men.

Our priorities this season have to be the Champions league cos that's where the money is and the premiership ditto point one.  Not some meaningless cup competition which no team that is in Europe take seriously.

Up until Wasilewski got sent off we were more than a match for them if King had scored on the goal line or Musa chip had gone in we would have beaten them.

We also do not need the fixture congestion we would have got if we had progressed in the competition.

I suggest some on this board need to go and support, Barcelona, Bayern Munich etc if they seriously think we should turn up and win every game.

Hopefully Wasilewski's final game for us. He's been something of a cult hero, but he was laughable tonight and has finally gotten his first red card for us. How has it taken this long?! As everyone has said, Schlupp was piss poor.

King and Musa offered absolutely nothing tonight. Gray was encouraging, especially with the amount of times he managed to cut inside Azpilicueta. Conceding that goal on half-time was always going to be a big blow, but letting in that equaliser (a fantastic one to be fair) so quickly after half time was disappointing. We held out for a while as Chelsea dominated, but Wasyl's red just made it impossible and it was a shame we had to sit through another 30 minutes instead of it happening within the 90 lol

Chilwell looked excellent going forward and is impressive in the air, but he really struggled with Moses. Maybe best to ship him out on loan for a few months again. This EFL Trophy can't do him that much good.

Obviously disappointed with the manner of the defeat, but I can't say I'm particularly bothered about the result. I don't think we should be focusing on CL and PL at the cost of everything else - I'd love an FA Cup run - but the League Cup is a bit of a joke competition, isn't it? Really don't know why it's not just scrapped - it devalues the FA Cup, adds extra fixtures for everyone... I just don't see the point of it to be honest?

Wished Wasilewski had gone out with a bang and broke costa's leg or something. The sooner he's out of football the better. Chelsea fans coining the family stand was a bit moronic as well.

The goal just before half time changed they game, we looked the better side and deserved the 2-0 lead, but a lack of concentration and with this being a completion they will want to win due to not being in Europe they came out 2nd half with there tails up.

even in the second half we could have won the game with a bit more composure even right at the death, so considering we changed a bulk of our team the result wasn't to bad over 90mins.

soon as we was down to ten they was always gonna score.

overall I'm not to bothered with the result however it would have been nice to dump them out the cup.

I've got to say I bitterly disappointed with going out last night and I haven't gotten over it yet.  Having been 2-0 up we need to see out the end of the first half then I really do think we would have gone onto win the match.

There are some positives from last night for example Gray I thought had a very good first half and was very good going forward but like everyone else in the second he didn't really show a lot.  King and Drinkwater in the centre showed it doesn't really work again and why not rest Drinkwater and play Amartey who's only played 4 games uptill last night.  Schlupp first game of the season wasn't a great one and offered nothing going forward so let's hope he just getting back up to speed.  And does Ranieri not think anything of Kapustka as he would have been one of the substitute I would have used instead of Vardy for Musa taking of Schlupp instead.

Reading some of these comments you'd think we'd gone out to a lower league team, or even a bottom half Prem side.

We've gone out to Chelsea, with the majority of the team our 'second team' - and went out in extra time with 10 men. Wonder if Everton think that their 'happy feeling' has gone because they lost to Norwich 2-0 at home. I doubt it. Glad some of you aren't in our dressing room, one defeat and it's a disaster.

Of course it's not ideal, we probably should be winning after being 2-0 up. But we're playing against a class side (Pedro, Cesc, Costa, Hazard all playing a part). Have a bit of perspective.

Decent first half but the goal on half time was always going to send us in pissed off and give Chelsea hope of a comeback.

Glad for Shinji, never scores a straightforward goal but they all count as they say. Musa was poor, looks easily shrugged off the ball and not up with the pace of the English game yet, hopefully not another Kramaric.

Wasyl's dismissal was pure stupidity, eagle eyed viewers around the kop end will have seen him shove his elbow into David Luiz's face at a first half corner, lucky not to walk for that. The challenge on Costa was shocking.

Was strange not seeing many familiar faces about the place, a lot of these 'innit bruv' types who were most likely wearing Arsenal shirts last season. Comes with success I guess.

Onto bigger and better things.

God I'm sick of people saying this.

Would you take 7th in the league and elimination from the CL in the last 16?

Because that is entirely a realistic situation with or without the EFL Cup. This competition and the extra few games isn't detrimental, we have a big enough squad. I want us to go on a cup run at the very least and perhaps even win one.

I'm sick of people not bothered by this. A few years ago this competition was our best chance of a trophy and now we get people turning their noses up at it.

It's not that I'm not bothered, just trying to stay positive.

Bang on. This was the key moment in the match that swung it their way.

Musa is great with the ball at his feet facing the opponent's goal, but he looks like he doesn't know how to do anything other than that! He doesn't seem to play a team role. It was very noticeable the difference when Vardy/Ulloa came on, and immediately started to close down the Chelsea defence.

On TV there was one moment it showed of Ranieri on the touchline talking to Musa, obviously giving him instructions. But Musa just didn't seem to acknowledge a single thing Ranieri was saying. I don't know how good his English is, but if it ain't great he certainly ain't gonna understand Uncle Claudio's pidgeon English.
