Arsenal Post Match Thread

Ok so the tactics tonight were to play for a draw away from home at a club we haven't beaten in 22 years who despite recent troubles are vying for their 3rd FA Cup in 4 years......sensible? ABSOLUTELY.....If anyone on here thinks attacking them and throwing men forward would have resulted in anything other than a defeat and possibly a heavy one you are as deluded as the players thinking we have a chance to qualify for the Champions League again. We have won 1 away match this season and even then it should have been a draw. Weve drawn what 4? And suddenly we are going to beat Arsenal ? Really?

Did it work? No but that was down to a piece of shitty bad luck and i thought every player battled hard tonight to achieve what would have been a well deserved and valuable away point.

But we put King on at half time in the away leg, cost ourselves the chance of ever getting an away goal, and put ourselves out of the tie. Again, refusing to put Gray on in that tie too.

Shakespeare's far too defensive.

I think some people are expecting too much of Gray, im not too sure about him, he shows very little end product.  Hope he gets a chance very against west brom instead of Mahrez. Mahrez looks lost at the moment

Diving on the ground blatantly looking to get players sent off has nothing to do with attack v defence for 80 mins. They threw themselves on the ground last season and done the same tonight. How many times have we sat back on a result (becoming an attack v defence game) and seeing the result out.

Shakey got his tactics wrong? Have a word with yourself. We lost 1-0 to a deflected shot that was way off target! Yes we sat back but Arsenal never really threatened us! We denied Arsenal space behind us how they like to play, especially playing Walcott and Sanchez. I don't see nothing wrong with playing Ulloa tonight, Arsenal aren't the most physical of sides and sitting deep allows us to either give Vardy something to chase or a target man in Ulloa to allow us to push up in numbers. I'm usually sticking up for Shinj but he had a poor performance tonight for the time he was on, poor control, passing and should of done better with his chance when Konchesky was injured.

Diving was in the 94th minute - game was over

sitting back on a lead is a different thing because the opposition become less controlled as time ticks by and they are even more nervous of our ability to break on them. Sitting back on a 0-0 for most of the game when the opposition are mentally unstable if they were to go behind is overly negative to me.

They got in behnd us on several occasions but werent good good enough to exploit it - that's the point- they are not playing with any confidence and we could have got at them. We have had a week off. This was the chance to let the players try and put the only blot on last season right. It felt more like Claudio's tactics. I understood paying leo gave us the option to change 3-5-2 but at no point did we look like replicating the intensity of last week's second half. Doesn't matter how we lose does it? A goal is a goal. got fed up with losing by an unlucky goal under the previous manager. we have shown we can get at capable opposition if the manager allows the players to do so. I am surprised that shakey didn't do that tonight. The game should have been viewed as a free hit. Not an opportunity to eek out a dull point.

Shakespeare allegedly Pearson's tactician; that's now looking like the truth.

He may be a motivator, but he's no tactician; no attempt to win the game this evening, and their goal so predictable.

Being reactive as opposed to the proactive version of last season I s what dooms us to failure.

Gray on with one minute of normal time is ridiculous.

Mahrez should be dropped, every game he is our opponents best player in that he continues to give them the ball, as opposed to our own players ffs. When will people wake up to this?

We made the better chances and restricted them to a sniff and a close shave. Tactically, we set up just right. What Shakespeare cannot account for is the execution (admittedly not easy) of our direct and fast attacking play. We are struggling personnel-wise which isn't down to to CS.

Also, proactive last season? Do you mean the way in which Ranieri routinely made changes at half.time because he got the starting lineup wrong? Surely that is exactly what reactive means.

And people having a go at Mahrez here are getting out of order. He didn't have a great game, but he didn't see the ball for the first twenty minutes and he was increasingly influential as the second half went on. Yeah, a couple of wasteful free kicks, but had two decent shots and created a couple of openings too. Not only that, but he put in another decent defensive shift.

Drinkwater was shockingly bad on the ball and Albrighton offered nothing in an attacking sense.

Ulloa's contribution was limited to a clearance and otherwise losses of possession. Shinji improved on him but he wasted our two best chances of the second half.

In a team that even last season looked limited in ability, I find it strange for people to have a go at our most skillful player and want him dropped/sold.

Also, I'm tired of the "deflected shot" argument being a defense.

If you sit back and let teams ping balls around your goal for 80 minutes, then odds are something will eventually go in - deflected or not. That goal was only a matter of time - the only gutting thing was that it came so late on in the game.

Absolutely. We can call them lucky all we want, if you invite pressure you'll probably succumb.

Yeah, I'l admit that if you look at him statistically, he doesn't look great. But he's always dangerous, and he's produced a lot of "nearly" moments - I can think of a lot of times where he's been just wide, of the keeper's made a good save. I think he's on the cusp of being great, and with a little more play time, maybe he'll get there.

But we're stifling his progress at the moment, and if I were him, I'd be off in the summer.

Can Ulloa vow never to play for our club again please?

Ridiculously slow. Played like he was running in treacle all game. Not that aerially great. Just pretty shite all round.

lol, what about Albrighton's end product? What are his goal/assist stats compared to Mahrez.

i'm not saying he's been great this year, or certainly not as good as last year. It's how he's constantly singled out. It's completely wrong

So Mahrez so called £35m genius player who has been compared to Barcelona's current greats; is now compared by his fans to..Marc Albrighton.

Wake up and smell the ****ing coffee..he is not worth his place.

Shaky needs to pull his thumb out of his arse and sort this team out he needs to drop the misfiring non performing players and bring in the hungry fringe players !!

Trouble is tho with Mahrez he can play damn awful for 89 minutes and suddenly pull a blinder out so do we drop him on his current form or keep him in knowing why he's capable of??

This game called out for Gray god knows why it took nearly 90 minutes for Shaky to bring him on ?

We lost to Arsenal away. The way some on here moan you would think we lost to a league 2 club. Shakey had lost 2 league games in 8 that's nit a bad return.

i don't know if he is right man for the job but give him credit we went to Arsenal and lost to a deflection.

This forum goes into meltdown as soon as something goes against us.

Most people commenting are providing a perfectly reasoned argument against Shakey using negative tactics against a team whose recently been in poor form and has just played 2 hours of football 3 days ago. Considering we've lost 17 away games (in total) this season, its not the loss that is galling, its the negative and tepid tactics and performance. Really disappointed in Shakey today.

Anyone else surprised how much wilf was beaten in the air by xhaka in the midfield. is he perhaps carrying a groin injury?  Xhaka isn't small but I would have expected wilf to have won far more than he did.

Normally I'd agree, but when was the last time he truly turned a game on its head with a moment of magic. I get what you mean and he is more than capable, but with recent performances what can we do? West Brom will have him for breakfast he's so easily bullied at the moment.

Those defending Mahrez ??? the guy is miles off it, look at the work rate and effort other players are putting in even if the quality isn't always there. I genuinely can't believe people feel he offers a threat, the only threat he's offered is that of turning possession over. He holds on to the ball for far too long and as a result potential attacks break down because of it. Yes it's great when he cuts in and out on the edge of the box but not when you know his ball is going into the keepers hands at the near post of not beating the first man following a feeble attempt at a chip.

Agree. I actually cringe when he is on the ball in our own half almost begging him to release it. Nine times out of ten he loses possesion. On the edge of the oppositions box well thats very different. He massively frustrates.

Wished we showed a bit more ambition, Arsenal were shite. Unlucky not to get a point tho. Shanchez is a little ****ing willy puller. We will smash Bournmouth and Watford. Hopefully Tottenham aswell.

For those saying we set up tactically very well and only lost one nil......

I think we only lost one nil cos Arsenal WERE knackered after last weekend. Despite having almost all the possession and play, they looked jaded in front of goal.

Personally, I think if we were up against a fresh and vibrant side tonight, who were converting their chances, we'd have been mullered.

Really?  So you don't think his performance is dictated by our "tactics"? It was obvious that whatever the plan was for Leo it didn't work and he should have been replaced at half time.

That was a poor effort and tactically I thought it was wrong early on.  That's our worst attempt at their ground since promotion.

I get what we were trying but the reaction to it not working was slow. We can harp on about a lucky deflection all night, but we invited it and lived on the edge all night.

He's had some great performances... but he's also had some exceptionally poor ones. You judge him on 90 min averages and he's well... average in al lot of areas.
