James, Lawrence & Barnes

We potentially have 4 new players in the squad already: Maguire, James, Lawrence & Barnes.

If the latter 3 make a positive impact this season, they'll feel like new signings.

Do you think these 3 can make a difference next season?

Got all excited for a minute ...   thought we had Gibson, Sigurdsson and Silva in the bag !! ...   :(

Edit : Thats it change the Thread name from '4 New signings' ....    :)

Hopefully Barnes - there is a lot of potential there. I hope he will be given some chances. Chilwell and Barnes in the team would be great for the academy.

James will play quite a bit. Lawrence I think will be sold before the Summer ends.

I think Barnes is going to play a bigger role than most expect next season.

I think you will find he goes on loan - needs to play in the Championship for at least a season

Why? Ok if we get to January and he hasn't broken into the team or played poorly then he should be loaned out but we should at least give him a chance as he is full of confidence and has been rising through the ranks rapidly. Last season was his first in the U23 squad. Since then he has played in the champions league (Which as a young kid doesn't happen unless there is potential) had a successful loan spell at a league 1 club and been player of the tournement at the U20 toulon tournement. I don't understand why people would want to just loan him out again without giving him a chance to get into the first team where he may manage to hold down a place.

James will be in the first team this year and have quite a big impact I feel, will supprise people. Lawrence I would like to see given a chance in the number 10 role and I think we will give him time in pre season to stake a claim, he has a poor pre season and I think we will sell him, a good one and he will start over Okazkai as from what I have seen of him (limited amount I might add) he does the closing down that Okazaki does but also has technical ability and has a better shot on him (This was in the championship though so he may fail to adapt to the premier league).

Barnes would probably be best suited on loan to a Championship club to see what his current level is.

A make or break season for James, he needs to break back into the squad as at least third or fourth choice central midfielder.

We need to make a decision on Lawrence in the next few weeks whether he's part of this squad or to be sold as he only has a year left on his contract. He needs to be offered a new one or be gone, either or but we can't have him making up the numbers and seeing his contract out with half a dozen appearances in cups and as substitute.

Where did I say it was my personal view - passing on what I understand to be the situation.

For what it is worth personally I would certainly see how all 3 players cope over the preseason but I would take some convincing before seeing either Lawrence or Barnes as starters in the current first team. With regards to specifically the number 10 position I agree we need to take the role to the next level but we should go and spend to get real quality (a creative link with work ethic) as we will need to improve the overall 11 if we lose the 2 players who are key members of the team.

The youngsters like Lawrence and Barnes will force their way in if they are good enough but I am not convinced either is good enough (TL) or ready (HB)!

Some on here talk like the switch from League 1 or Championship is easy - its not the gulf is massive and if you are prepared to gamble with Prem survival on that basis you are naive - the owners will not and not only want survival but the club to grow and be a constant Top 8 side. Oka is a lot better player than he is given credit for and whilst goal scoring maybe an issue his physical strength, power, pace and overall game is markedly better than TL!

Lawrence deserves a chance. He was an outstanding player of the second tier last season. If we signed another player with similar stats, we'd all be excited

Unless he sorts his eyebrows out he'll never make it here.

They all looked good but there are question marks hanging over all three of them.

I wouldn't abandon the search for bringing in a quality midfielder.

If you take Lawrence's season last year and we signed him this summer he'd cost around £10-15 million. Yes, there'd be worries that he couldnt make the step up but the gap between the two leagues isn't as big as it used to be. The PL is full of a fair amount of dross. I hope he sees this summer as a chance to be integrated with us, rather than looking to leave as we might have a useful attacking player in a position we badly need fresh faces in.

Barnes will get a chance, that's more of a given than Lawrence from what I've been told. Shakespeare rates him extremely highly.

Barnes will need more experience (perhaps on loan) while Lawrence deserves a chance to see if he can produce for us what he has been doing for Ipswich and James if he keeps working on his fitness will surely feature particularly in the cup games!

If Barnes gets serious minutes and is given time to improve without everybody jumping on his back saying "he'll never make it" I'd be all for him staying.

In reality he'll probably be just about making the squad and playing the the dregs in the development squad. I'd rather he's out at a Championship team playing week in week out.

Sounds like Matty James smashed it with Barnsley last year, so you'd think he'll be up there challenging for a starting spot.

Lawrence deserves a crack after the season he's had for Ipswich.

Also think Kapustka would feel like a new signing if he featured more regularly.

James - could even be a starter if his injury problems are behind him, a quality Premiership CM if he plays to his potential

Lawrence - shone in a poor Ipswich side but not convinced he has the all round game to make it

Barnes - know nothing about him so going to hope he'll be on the bench with occasional minutes
