However, the wider meaning of the word means its akin to using the p word or n word. neither would be acceptable in the stadium so this should also not be sung.
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 If it was then all other chants that make use of the word 'yids' have to be as well I feel. I know where the word comes from of course, but for me it's just a nickname for Tottenham.
Fox92 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Are you Jewish? Why would you feel uncomfortable? Spurs sing Yids themselves. Not saying it's justified but until they stop then nobody else will.

foxile5 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Yiddish isn't an insult though, is it? It's like British to Brit isn't it? Or is there a history of negativity attached. I'm genuinely none the wiser on the history of the term. It would be odd if Tottenham took it on with it being derogatory.
Mr Weller Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Yep it's anti-Semitic and there's no justification for it whatsoever.

It's more like Paki is to Pakistanis.

Yid has a well known pejorative connotation. It's a slur and anyone using it, is either antisemitic or was really, really living under a rock their whole life.
Tuna Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Why do we care? This is not a Chelsea or Spurs forum.
RumbleFox Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Too much compassion on here sometimes. I can't take all the love. X

The derogatoryterms for Jewish people I have heard of are far worse.

foxile5 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Just now, ZeGuy said: Not having a go at you and whilst there is always worse, "yid " is still a slur nonetheless. I hadn't realised.
Sly Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 A bit like calling done from Japan, who’s Japanese ..... a Jap?!?
Guest MarshallForEngland Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 When you start ignoring the actual intent of somebody's actions, you get absurd conversations like this one about whether a particular word constitutes an infraction of some unwritten law of political correctness. All you need to ask yourself is "Did the people chanting this mean 'he hates the jews' or 'he hates all people associated with Tottenham Hotspur'?" If you think that the answer to this question doesn't matter, I would tend to think you're a lost cause and no argument will convince you that it does.
bovril Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Yid is an anti-Semitic term and the Spurs fans who sing it aren't Jewish.
Bayfox Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Nope. Close thread. It's football humour at its best. I'd have joined in if it was aimed at Harry ****.
