During the 19th century, 'Scotch' was used very frequently to mean 'Scottish'. Even Robbie Burns used the word Scotch. So I'm not sure why our Scottish neighbours scotch at its usage nowadays, considering that they seem quite happy about the continued use of the phrases Scotch broth, Scotch mist, and Scotch whisky. Perhaps I'm just ignorant.
