Grow up and get behind Riyad, or: stop listening to the press and wait and see how he reacts on the pitch

The icing on the cake for me was that ridiculous statement this morning.  Whole thing stank of a childish rant at losing out on a £15 million payout for his bunch of so-called advisors.

Sat on the bench for Peterborough, miss a days training, go on a road trip around the UK a day later, skip another game in the process, probably miss out at the weekend.  And the prize for this is

£100,000.

Well depressing that.  ****.  What a disappointment.

I think fining him is a terrible idea, it just further inflames the situation.

I can't see him being involved on Saturday so let him have the rest of the week off and clear his head and allow the club to smooth things over and reintegrate him to the squad. The next game is Man City so a great opportunity to do himself a lot of favours in an interview and show Pep and the Man City fans what they're missing.

If history has taught him anything then he needs to play like a world class player for the rest of the season to get his move. Downing tools again and there may be little interest.

didn't the club already fine him 200k?

gerard mate, i take you for a smart man, do you think that the owners won't ask for more than 95 million in the summer if he keep playing this good and just say "well, that's the market now", because i do.

here is what riyad thinks (from last year)

In the interview, Mahrez said: "I wanted to be transparent, not play people around and be honest about it.

"They didn't want to sell me. They said, 'Yes, (there will be) no problem if something comes up.

"But behind the scenes they were blocking stuff - talking to clubs but just not wanting to sell me."

people are so mad at him but they can't imagine that maybe, just maybe, the owners are playing a game.
he was dumb thinking that there was loyalty or any such thing as a gentlemen's agreement. if he could go back in time, he wouldn't have signed that contract even if that meant he would only get 30k a week.

people are trying to paint riyad as the devil and the owners did nothing wrong. i'm algerian and not just a leicester fan so i can sympathies with both sides

i just hope riyad comes out and clears everything up. if the club will ask more and more every time a big team overpays then he won't get his big move

no offence but money doesn’t solve depression. i assume he’s not actually suffering from a mental illness (not actually sure he’d serious claim he was) but just because he got a lot of money on payday it doesn’t mean he can’t be down in his own head.

Not fining him would be worse considering the lengths we have already gone to.

I'm Gerard on this one. Fining him is a crap idea. It only radicalizes both parties and chances of finding a middle ground are gone.

We're beginning to appear under a pretty bad light in the media (no matter how unjustified it is) and it might make potential signings wary of us.

He's gone in the summer no matter what as things went way too far now.

Now it depends on the club to either get the best out of him for the next months and stay high on the table or go to the clash and see the teams performance going down.

Ah fck that. I was so happy with two games this week and it all went south.

the owners are businessmen, they will do anything to drain every little penny out of him when he goes. there ain't any loyalty in football. fans only want the players to be loyal, the club can get rid of a player if they want, twist his hand, ask the manager to play him less, put him on the U23, clear his locker and not allow him to eat food with his teammates (like everton did for oumar niasse) but if a player tries to twist the club's hands, he is the devil

Of course it doesn’t.

However using the word ‘depression’ is out of order considering what a serious condition it is for those who DO actually suffer with the condition.

He is not doing himself any favours.

You are basically saying that in the summer someone was trying to offer 50 million for him but the club didnt tell him about it

The guy is a magnificent footballer but he' not the brightest. Does he really expect the big clubs to still come in for him if he boycotts training?

i don't know, maybe, maybe not. he though that staying another year (after the 2015/2016) will make sure that the owners will let him go for a decent price. and that didn't happen, he thought playing very good this season will make the owners soft (how stupid) and they will lower the price, also didnt happen. he now thinks "i play good, they dont let me go. i play bad, they don't let me go, so way play" (again, how stupid!)

riyad is a muppet, no one is losing money to make you happy

Fine the ****er. Why people think it will be reduced price in the summer is beyond me. We do not need to sell him. We choose to sell him. If he wants to down tools then keep fining him. Stupid haircutted ****.

Nobody has blocked anything though. Just they haven't offered a fair price.

I'm sure the agreement still stands as far as the owners are concerned. A decent fair offer comes in and he can go.

like i said, he thought because he stayed for another year that the owners will give him a special treatment (how naive, unless they promised him that. which is also dumb trusting people who do business to treat it personally) and will be ready to negotiate a lower price.

if he plays bad, teams won't come for him and the owners won't lower the price, if he plays good, teams will come for the first price tag and the owners will drive the price up. so, damned if do, damned if he doesn't. i won't be surprised if the owners are asking for a high price just to fend teams off

Roma's offer was definitively too low

City came in with an offer with 1 day left of the January transfer window

When you take these factors into consideration you have no argument

I think it's a lose lose for all concerned in the end, mainly because Mahrez lacks professionalism and respect to his contract and the club.

Born through man city coming too late in the window for us to get any sort of replacement of any quality. Imagine if we had got 70m for him yesterday and we panicked bought Andros Townsend for 35m.. we would be better getting 50 to 60 in the summer and planning the recruitment and spending wisely.

Only issue now of course is Mahrez is setting fire to his future chances, if he played got his head together and played similar to how he has done the rest of the season I think he would have got his move in the summer. Surely the truly big clubs would think twice now his character is under question.

Such a shame it's come to this really.

Are you?

That he "has never behaved in any way other than completely professional?" I think Pep would have very quickly begged to differ. Perhaps turning up to training on time would be good place to start.

I'm a lot more interested in how he plays on the pitch and I don't think he's ever really sulked after not being sold.

Yet events off the pitch can conspire to compromise that and I'd wager that aside from the ignominy of the Charles De Gaulle debacle he ad a right cob on when he got home.

I agree, he needs to do his talking on the pitch in a City shirt. If he continues to play as he has this season he'll be rewarded with the move he desperately craves this summer from a club that genuinely wants him (as opposed to a stop gap) and so long as he earns his place, will feature him in their starting XI and their future style and strategy.
