Manchester United will be reminded of transfer mistake in Leicester fixture
Man Utd's first Premier League fixture after the international break is against Leicester City.

Were Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asked to compile a list of Premier League teams he doesn't want Manchester United to face next, you can bet Leicester City would be somewhere near the top of it.

Brendan Rodgers' side began the campaign as many pundits' pick to upset the apple cart and break into the division's established top six and it is already evident as to why.

Leicester sit third in the table having taken eight points from games against Wolves, Chelsea, Sheffield United and Bournemouth over the season's opening weeks.

They would have found themselves level on points with Manchester City in second place had they taken full advantage of their second-half dominance at Stamford Bridge.

Rodgers, who is rebuilding his reputation in England after his sacking by Liverpool four years ago, is the managerial antithesis of the pragmatic Claude Puel and the 46-year-old's approach is playing to his expressive players' strengths.


James Maddison's rise has continued and Jamie Vardy, into his 33rd year now, has already scored three league goals this season.

United will boast the game's best midfielder providing Paul Pogba has returned to full fitness by the time Leicester visit on Saturday week, but they will not boast the best midfield.

Pogba will likely be joined in the heart of United's team by Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira or Fred when United play Leicester. Rodgers, meanwhile, has the luxury of selecting from Wilfed Ndidi, Youri Tielemans, James Maddison and Hamza Choudhury among others.

It is a damning indictment of the state of United's midfield when a team of Leicester's stature is arriving at Old Trafford with superior midfield options to the hosts.


What grates the most is that United considered signing at least two of the aforementioned players earlier on in the summer.

Both Maddison and Tielemans were considered as potential additions during the transfer window.

Granted, Maddison was already at Leicester and likely to command a hefty transfer fee, but United's decision to pass on Tielemans for £40million remains a head-scratcher.

The former Anderlecht prodigy would have been a significant upgrade on Andreas Pereira, who plays with heart but is simply lacking in quality.


Even Ndidi was linked with a move to United and in June admitted he was flattered to be so.

However, United took the unwise move of neglecting to strengthen at all in midfield, despite Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini having departed earlier in the year and Nemanja Matic having suffered a catastrophic loss in form.

If United's slump continues against Leicester after the international break, Solskjaer might be left wondering what might have been.

lets say they did sign all those players they would have spent too much even for Man U’s standards!

 

Tielemans - £40m

Ndidi - £50-£60m

Maddison - £70-£80m

 

and Maguire £85m

 

We would have got nearly £250m from them in one window! (Obviously excluding Tielemans money)

 

i know it’s paper talk but it was still published and wrote by them! They honestly live on a different planet.

I just love the fact that they’re comparing Man Utd’s midfield, which boasts a World Champion, and cost them a combined £140m, to ours which cost £75m, has 2 English players (one Leicester born and bred and the other from Coventry), 1 England international, all very highly rated AND all under 23. And they’re saying that ours is vastly superior. 

 

What a time to be alive.

Would like to gently point out that taking £40 million off Manu for a Monaco player might be deemed a tad arrogant too.

I agree about the expectation and most of the media don’t like us. But Wrighty was one of the few who heaped praise on us from the earliest part of the 15/16 season. I like the guy; he calls it how it is and isn’t one of the generic pack

That didn't stop virtually every journalist claiming that Newcastle got the transfer fee for Rondon when he was a West Brom player, it's almost as though they haven't got a clue outside of the top 6.

Then its up to us,to Ignore the hype..be happy with how it pans out,und Not Let ourselves be infected, or affected,by the running hype of expectation...

The Media will follow and feed off the fans forums....So really the responsibility lies mainly on our positive/negative utterings...

I like Wrighty, as well. He seems genuine and a good laugh. I don't think he's biased or has a petty agenda like a lot of pundits. Coughsuttoncough.

I'm only kidding dude!

 

You did give a range of values for Ndidi and Maddison, then used the higher values, and then added over 10% to that. That's why I assumed you'd included Tielemans transfer.
