It's not as easy as it sounds. They have to strike a deal with us to cover some of his wages and would any team really want a squad place taken up for a year by a player with his injury record and risk their budget on a player who is always injured.

If he’d have stayed injury free he’d no doubt be in or around the first 11. I remember him having a fantastic game last season away at Chelsea.

I wonder how many games he's missed in the last 3 and a half years...100 maybe?

 

No idea what his future is with us, not good enough for the first team, probably on too much money to be a realistic signing for a championship team and too risky a proposition with his fitness record anyway.

 

I think he'll probably end up on a series of season long loans like Paul Gallagher did until we eventually release him when his contract is up.

It’s nigh on impossible to miss the amount of football he has and come back and compete at a level that he hasn’t had that much success or experience at. I think his future lies in the Championship or maybe he’s not even got a future playing if his injuries carry on. He must be pretty close to packing it in regardless of the cushy contract he has with us. Hope he gets fit as he’s a decent bloke but I can’t see how he’ll ever get the minutes with us.

It's a pity what happened to his career due to injuries. But you cannot build a team around players who are constantly missing due to injuries. Therefore I'm afraid it's time for both him and the Club to move on.

He's unlikely to get regular game time here which is what he needs to get back his fitness. He should be allowed leave in January even on a free for services rendered.

Contract has another two years to run, he'll stick around. Fairly scandalous that he was offered four years.

Unfortunately sentimental thinking instead of sensible thinking is the cause for this. Also I get a feeling Shakespeare pushed the club to give him a 4 year deal because he was 'one of the lads' as a tactic to get the longer standing players on his side.

Agree but I think Rudkin is most to blame for this. Isn't he in charge of contract negotiations.

Personally think we will give him a golden handshake at the end of the season and he will either quit or slip down to league 1 or 2. His body is just not up to it.

I meant pay off to terminate his contract, otherwise we may have another two years of him earning off us.

All well and good but there is no reason that he would want to take that when he can stay and get paid his full salary. it is possible however, that the club have a break clause, (including a level of compensation to  the player), related to long term fitness. Obviously this would need to be backed up by medical assessments etc in order to terminate his employment.

The other alternative, is that he may be tempted to take a severance payment and try his luck as a free agent. This way he would be more likely to find a club willing to take a gamble on him if no transfer fee were involved and he could afford a cut in wages if he had some "redundancy" money as back up. Also I have no idea how much of his wages are made up of basic salary/appearance bonuses etc, so a move where he gets regular games but on a reduced basic may well be more lucrative to him than staying?

 

Either way, I cannot see a future for him here and the longer he stays the harder it will be for him to get another club as he will be the "forgotten man"

Has anyone heard when our Matty is coming back to play yet, seem to have all gone very quiet after almost 12 months out. Surprised there has not been any press releases or general fitness updates at all. He is about half way through his latest 4 year contract so that'll need renewing again soon.

Could have sworn i saw him play in an U23's game a month or 2 back, but my memory is shite so don't take my word for it
