Oh Christ that Jaws opening is brutal. Still shocks to this day, even with all the gore porn films around these days. I remember watching it for the first time as a kid and thinking ahhh she'll be fine OH **** SHE'S BEING EATEN ALIVE.

Beat me to it ...   I watched it with my sister who was living in Bermuda and the next day there was no one in the sea ...    even now I have a quick peek around for that big fin when swimming in the sea ...   cracking film.

Was just about to put Once Upon A Time In The West up, but kudos to @pSinatra

 

Also, the start of Star Wars: A New Hope. Might seem a little cliche now, but it was the first. That spaceship passes over the top of the screen and you think, that's a big ship, then these star destroyer follows on... and on... and on... dwarfing the first ship and swallowing it up.

Christopher Waltz's opening scene in Inglorious Basterds is incredible.

One of my favourite opening scenes ever. That kick, the colour scheme, the intrigue it set up for the rest of the film. Quite groundbreaking at the time in 1999. Can't believe it's 20 years old, I still remember the first time I watched it quite vividly!

Agree 100%. Watched it on the cinema without knowing anything about the fiim,  so wasn't looking for 'the twist '.
