Maguire to Man Utd / Man City

Its true, but it does rather overlook the historic element. For example, why are Everton seen as a big (not top 6, but big) club? Why is Sheff Wed a big club? Why is Villa a big club? (ffs)

It clearly has bugger all to do with the last 20 years or so, there is also something more intangible at play, perhaps the media proliferating the image (As they can be* lazy in this regard). Arguing only that there are other factors at play in what makes a club big, clearly sustained success is the main reason, but its not that simple I would suggest.

*sorry @UpTheLeagueFox not you obviously ;)

The intangible factor at play is fans continually having this “which club is bigger” argument which is absolutely pointless. It is only a way for people to vent their own insecurities.

You probably won’t have to trawl Twitter and message boards or listen to sports talk radio for very long before coming across someone earnestly arguing that Nottingham Forest are bigger than Sheffield United or that Celtic or Rangers are bigger than Inter Milan, which is saying nothing about nothing.

Red Cafe - ramblings of the delusional.

Man Utd will always be bigger than us. That doesn’t mean we cannot be better than them - against the odds.

Arguably they are the biggest football club in the world, at least in the top 2 or 3.

Man City ascended on a fountain of oil money and are now a better, more successful club than Utd. Will they ever be bigger? Unlikely.

Being a a huge club, though, does not insulate you from failure, dips in form or utter chaos. Utd are embracing chaos currently. We have a chance to creep above them, but that’s all it is, a chance.

I remember, not so long back, when mclaren were the biggest, most successful team in F1, every driver saw them as the team to drive for as they had the best car and most amount of money. Where are they now... 2nd division at best but with the best facilities in f1, a bit like Man Utd.  Red bull came from nowhere on the back of a failing team, now have 4 world championships and earn 800 million a year (which they’re only allowed to spend 400 million) where are they now ...1st division. There’s only one way to go when you’re at the top, and it ain’t upwards. It doesn’t matter how much money you’ve got and it doesn’t matter what your history is or how big a club you are, all that counts is next season.

Yes Man City have spent an absolute ton of money, and yes it's all 'dodgy' oil money with suspect sponsorship deals and FFP workarounds. BUT they've at least had a plan. The new owners came in, created a 10 year plan and have executed it (minis not doing quite as well as they should have in the CL in the last 2 years).

Meanwhile it's been 6+ years since Fergie left Man Utd and they've clearly had no plan, no strategy whatsoever. They're a joke.

As are barcalona. My point being, at the moment to be a truly world class player, Utd isn’t the team to pick.

and Man u are bigger than Real

Get out of it. Maybe if you count the 3 million Chinese fans, yes but as far as success and therefore status is concerned Real Madrid are miles ahead of Man Utd.  Man Utd have won the league 20 times and the European cup 3 times, real have won the league 33 times and the European cup 13 times. Real Madrid was a team set up to win with royal decrees and all that stuff, Man Utd was a club set up to cater for depressed mancs.

Barcelona 26 25
Atlético Madrid 10 10
Athletic Bilbao 8 7
Valencia 6 6
Real Sociedad 2 3
Deportivo La Coruña 1 5
Sevilla 1 4
Real Betis 1 0
Racing Santander 0 1
Las Palmas 0 1
Zaragoza 0 1
Sporting Gijón 0 1
Villarreal 0 1
