Djene Dakonam

Leicester eyeing possible Harry Maguire replacement… but they face competition - EXCLUSIVE
LEICESTER, West Ham and Watford are locked in a three-way battle for Getafe centre-back Djene Dakonam.

Djene, 27, was being monitored by Arsenal earlier in the transfer window but Express Sport understands they have now officially ended their interest.

That leaves the Premier League rivals in a tussle to sign the highly-rated Togo International.

Djene is desperate to move and has told his Getafe team-mates he expects a deal to be struck before the transfer window in England shuts on August 8.

He has a release clause in his contract of £31million but Getafe are willing to listen to offers of around £18m plus add-ons and the fee is unlikely to put off any of his Premier League suitors.

Leicester, in particular, could be in need of a new centre-back if Harry Maguire gets his move to Manchester United.

Like Maguire, Djene is known for his ability to bring the ball out from the back, although at just 5ft 10in tall, he does not possess the commanding presence of his English counterpart.

West Ham have been tracking him all summer and might hold the upper hand as they are said to be considering a shock move for fellow countryman Emmanuel Adebayor who Djene recently described as 'an older brother'.

They are well-stocked with Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena as Manuel Pellegrini's first-choice centre-back pairing but lack a bit of strength in depth.

Meanwhile, Watford have already moved to shore up their own defence with the signing of Craig Dawson from West Brom.

Djene has just come off the back off an excellent season as he helped unfancied Getafe to a fifth-place finish in La Liga and qualification for next season's Europa League.

He made 34 league appearances last term as Getafe conceded just 35 goals in 38 La Liga games - fewer than Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The defender has had his problems with discipline in the past, though, and picked up 13 yellow cards in all competitions in 2018-19.

But that does not appear to have put anybody off as teams in Italy are also monitoring his situation.

While he would prefer to move to England, the transfer window in Serie A does not close until August 23.

That gives them more time to negotiate a deal but Djene's representatives will only pursue it if they can not secure a Premier League club before next Thursday.

He is a good player but so are Soyuncu and Benkovic, if we HAVE to bring in another defender then they must tick a few key boxes.

Commanding at set pieces -  this was a real problem of ours before Maguire and Evans partnered up together

Good passer

There is obvious plenty more they need to be, Maguire is fairly slow so a player with pace would be an added benefit.

Seems decent. I think Maguire will go to Man U on deadline day for an astronomical price and I can see the logic in bringing someone else in, even if Soyuncu / Benkovic eventually take over. Dunk I think is a good player but 40m+ being banded about is a huge waste of any upside we get on Maguire, so someone like this could be a decent compromise.

Of course all things being equal I'd prefer to keep hold of Maguire and our current squad. We are in good shape!

Be in even better shape if we got a class winger in

Yep I think we all agree on that one!

We've made a deadline day signing in each of the last three seasons, so I am convinced at least one more player will sign for the club.

Hope so as with a marhez type winger in could really push on

This lad's only 5ft10.

Not a fan of replacing our biggest aerial threat with a short arse.

He's just a shorty who thinks that he is our one..."

The kind of replacement I prefer in comparison to dunk etc. £18m + relatively cheap wages you’d presume.

Dunk is at least proven in the Premiership. This short arse as someone put it is 27, unproven and just another pointless risk that he's any better than Benkovic or Soyuncu  (the latter having cost more and is young). Plus we still have Morgan who despite his age is probably better than all three. Despite their leaky defence and desparation,  Arsenal don't appear to have rushed in, I wonder why? 27 and still at Getafe, can he really be that promising?  If Benkovic can get and remain fit he's absolutely got to be worth a try compared to yet another squad player like this. Soyuncu too has more potential surely. Just lazy journalism I think.
