You are not alone:

Bane of my bleeding life, I'm so rarely satisfied by the sleep I get I can actually remember individual nights that I slept well from 2003.

My tips, that can and have worked at various points, and I should really put into practice in a more disciplined way myself are:

1) Don't worry about it. For me, the main thing that keeps me awake is my overactive mind. Worrying about sleeping just shoehorns in another thing in there to go over again and again and again in the dead of night. Weirdly, getting to the point when I think I'm f***** and will never sleep again and accept that is the point when my sleep has improved.

2) This sort of contradicts the above, but being deliberately overly positive about going to bed can help, e.g. I'm looking forward to going to bed, I'm going to sleep brilliantly and feel amazing in the morning. I think this makes sense probably because when you start worrying about the sort of night you're going to have it just makes it worse.

3) Routine. Go to bed at a sensible time, in exactly the way I'm not doing at the minute, giving yourself plenty of time to relax, with no pressure to get x amount of sleep in before you've got to get up again. Absolutely do NOT find yourself still playing Fortnite, in order to "help" your son's experience points tally, at 12.30 am on a weekday

4) If you cannot sleep don't lie there getting stressed. Get up, do something boring for a bit like the washing up you couldn't be arsed to do before you went to bed, make your lunch for the next day or something. This will help turn your brain off

5) Relocate from your bed for a bit. For some reason, if I get out of my comfy bed and lie on my not especially comfy sofa, the chances of me falling asleep increase dramatically.

6) Watch telly. Supposedly scientifically proven to be more helpful than mobile/tablet viewing or reading. This really works for me. Something interesting but not overly stimulating, like historical documentaries is best, I find

7) Murder your problems away

Good luck, everyone

The Insomnia thread has a load of advice but here's a couple from a guy who has experienced insomnia from time to time since I was in my 40s.

1.  Avoid alcohol.  It may get you to sleep but it will wake you up again at some unearthly hour in the morning.

2.  Sleep is a routine.  Try to go to bed at a regular time.

3.  Get some pills from you GP, e.g. Zopiclone.  They can be used when sleep just won't come and can help restore a lost sleeping pattern.  Just don't take them every night.  When I was in a pattern of not sleeping and getting more and more stressed as the night went on I started to get anxious even before going to bed and adrenaline doesn't help sleep.  Just knowing I had the pills available if necessary helped me relax and made it easier to sleep.

Used to really struggle until a couple of years ago. I started putting my ear phones in and listening to podcasts and now I'm usually asleep before the end of the podcast.

Ask for Melatonin as a first choice, Zopiclone should be a last resort. If you have an addictive personalty stay away.

Podcasts are useful if you have a wandering mind.

A fan, to keep body temperature not to hot for sleep.

Get a better bed. Seriously.

Add to that new cover(s) and a new pillow. I'd recommend sheep's wool as lining for both, I've had it for a while now and it's fantastic, so comfortable.

It has Swiss stone pine flocks added to the mix, which gives it an essential touch, very relaxing smell. Works wonders, very soothing.

Never slept better.

Ditch the screen time. Eat well. Exercise, even if it's a 20 minute routine at home. Read a book made of paper in the evening.

Destress. Meditate and talk things through with someone.

I doubt if anyone under forty even owns one. 🙁

Hitting 40 this year and do have some issues sleeping. Mind thinks too much. I try to avoid screen time but even then i have issue. Sometimes i put on american news and it literally bores me to sleep within 20 minutes.

Never under estimate a good wank, sometimes settles the brain and all 30 seconds tires you out. @Countryfox guess my life does revolve around sex of some kind lol

I learn something new every day, when I first had my insomnia problems Melatonin wasn't legally available in the UK.  I did get some during a visit to the USA as I'd been advised that pilots used it to regulate their body clocks.  I've only ever used it for the same reason, I used to do some work in the Middle East, three hours ahead of GMT so when I arrived and everyone was turning in at 10pm local time it was only 7pm for me and there was no way I could sleep at that time.  This didn't help when they expected me to be ready for work the next day at 7am local time (4am UK time).  My solution was to take a melatonin tablet which knocked me out and left me in good condition for the next day.  It didn't have the after effects of Zopiclone, however I did find that my body's natural ability to produce its own melatonin to make me sleep the next evening was affected and I had a poorer sleep the next night.  My golden rule was never to take melatonin for more than one night.

Totally agree with your point about addictive personality, Zopiclone and other generic tablets can be addictive.

Avoid electronics and food an hour before bed, read a book, do some exercise.........you will sleep like a log.

My last resort is to count how many football grounds I’ve been to.I still don’t know the answer.

101 watching City.

Plus ADO Den Haag. Ajax, sparta Rotterdam, nac breda, utrecht, PSV and excelsior Rotterdam on various trips to holland.

Obviously that doesn't help you. But theres a website you can plot them all on. Footballgroundmap.com or something

My youngest has always had difficulty sleeping at night. It started with night terrors at exactly the same time every night. 10:10pm. Now though it seems she has an anxiety/fear of being the last one still awake in the house at night. It is turning into a drama on a nightly basis now, it’s like she’s got into a habit and she/we don’t know how to break the cycle.

Its really frustrating for us as parents because all all I want is to be able to help her but it’s like she zoned out and we can’t get any information out of her. Sometimes it can take well over an hour to settle her, which then takes its toll on our own sleep patterns.

Is it the Tom Meighan Radio Leicester podcast? That should do the trick for anyone!

Find highlights of or our Champions League group stage away tie against Copenhagen. Actually, good luck in finding any highlights of our Champions League group stage away tie against Copenhagen.

"Away, tie" - so we'll discount the first clip shall we?

The second game in Copenhagen was possibly the most tedious game of football I have ever watched.

Give the "Headspace" app a try.

Although its a meditation app theres a good few sections on sleep.  it sounds a bit airy fairy (and i was massively sceptical before i started using it), but it really is good. i've never slept as well as i do with that.

if only my 6 month old would give it a whirl....
