The 2010 decade will end in a few months. What will you mostly remember this decade for?

For me the explosion of social media is mental. 

 

The Arab  Spring that began in Tunisia in 2011 had a dramatic effect on what followed (Syria, ISIS, Libya, Yemen etc).

 

Smart phones have revolutionised so many industries. 

 

On football, crazy decade for our club. Our upward trajectory has been quite sensational.

 

Of course there is Brexit, Trump etc,  but politics has always been toxic in my lifetime anyway. Not unique to 2010s.

The Olympic Games in London.  I don't think it could have been any better.  I feared the worst if I'm being honest, but the opening ceremony was ridiculously good. 

 

I felt proud to be British.

Politics has always been toxic but this decade definitely saw previously fringe nationalist-populist views becoming more mainstream, probably as a result of the 08 economic crash and partially thanks to social media, as you mentioned. So I think it will be remembered for that above all. 

 

In terms of football, the '16 title win is just insane. I can't really comprehend it now.

 

Personally, I'll remember it for living abroad for most of the decade, travelling a lot, meeting my partner (January 2010), improving career prospects, and drinking far too much.

We won the Premier League.  When I've forgotten everything else that glowing memory will remain.

I'm going to look at it from a general rather than personal perspective.

 

The good:

 

The most unlikely title win imaginable (obviously)

The massive advances in connecting and information tech

The 2012 Olympics

The various medical science breakthroughs

The success of the first Brit male singles player to win Wimbledon for eight decades

 

The bad:

 

The continual rise of the far-right across the world driven by polarising politics

The continual stagnation (relatively speaking) of space-related tech and the resultant politics-related failure to explore more there

The pushback against the move towards better womens and LGBT rights in so many places by those who believe that such rights are somehow like pie and as such they get less if those groups get more

 

The ugly (and possibly the most important):

 

The failure of practically all world governments to consider the long-term environmental future of the planet and as a result its degradation increasing at a fearful rate and the amount of time needed to address it before the consequences become truly dire shrinking ever more rapidly

Added that. Both are equally as dangerous in my opinion a is any form of extremism.

Fair enough, there isn't an awful lot of difference between brutal authoritarianism of any type - gulag, concentration camp.

 

But that being said, over the last few years it's the former that has been making greater steps in the political control process in more places than the latter IMO.

What concerns me about the former in the UK is the correlation with Brexit which seems to have reinforced or in some perverse way legtimised the xenophobic message of these groups.

Probably a discussion for another thread, but yes - the association with Brexit, as well as many other movements in places around the world where the primacy of one nation state is believed paramount.

A crazy decade of supporting Leicester when you think about it. So much has happened! Loads of insane highs and massive lows.

 

From a personal point of view I've actually grown up this decade. Feels bad

Personally i will remember it for my brothers and sisters weddings and my sister having two children and my grandmothers funeral.

The unexpected and the unbelievable foxes title win.

the total mess that is Brexit and the massive divide between our politicians and the people.

the fantastic London olympics and the Bristish winners of the Tour De France starting with Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The emergence of China as a superpower, projected to have the world's largest economy by 2020 with an estimated GDP per capita equal to the US by the late 2050s (although the IMF predicts that this will fall by 2025). China overtook the US as the world's largest trading nation, filed the most patents, expanded its military, landed Yutu on the moon yet despite its cultural history and growth in entertainment, state censorship continues to stymie free speech and expression.

 

The decade in which Clinton Morrison somehow became a football pundit.

 the decade began with me planning to live in England again for about 10 years... lasted 15 months

 

Ill remember that ten years goes by in the blink of an eye and there is no time for regrets.

Since 2010 life has been kind to me I feel. I’ve grown up as a person and really developed. Married my childhood sweetheart and had two children with her. Ran a marathon. Bought a house. Changed jobs and have a really promising career path ahead which I am well on the way with. 

 

Leicester city winning the the premier league an obvious high. Such a good time to be a fan right now.

The 2010s was a pretty wank decade, lets be honest. For me the vast majority of things that stand out are negative, nationally and globally.

 

Personally though as the first decade in which I've been an adult (16-26) it's been cracking
