We had some international colleagues arrive from abroad yesterday. All been sent back today.

I wouldn't mind if I was an 'international traveler' but not sure if Birmingham to Dublin really counts.

I've already filled out their form saying I haven't been to China, Italy, Iran, South Korea etc. recently, but apparently I'm still unclean ;)

Just been informed by my Dublin client that they're cancelling all the upcoming sessions I was due to deliver there this month.

Apparently they're banning 'all international travelers and visitors' from their premises for the time being.

Our company (a large American multi national) has banned all travel too. Although, they'd already banned it anyway for cost saving reasons a few months ago. Bang goes my beano to Bucharest!

Until you’ve been completely checked out (In both senses) by the woman from Poltergeist I think this is the correct notion to take mate...

Yeah. Wrong thread.

But you’re probably right - would much rather have Corbyn and Abbott leading the charge on this.  :crylaugh:

For what it’s worth - I’m not sure what more the Govt could do. I think they’ve been fairly proportional in their response.

If you missed it, check out PMQ’s on Wednesday...Boris came out of it pretty well and put Jezza back in his box. (Wtf is he still doing there, btw...it’s very eggy and slightly embarrassing).

It was with regard to stockpiling so it seemed the right thread.

And I was talking about lying, not pmqs or any alternative government.

Do you have a bell to ring?

They need to just shut everything down now. Schools, universities, football matches etc.

The virus had a 10-27 day incubation period.

The cases we're hearing about today began potentially up to a month ago.

We can see from Italy where we're heading if we don't take action ASAP.

The government waited too long. It took Boris until Monday to hold a cobra meeting to agree a containment plan but within 3 days of that it was admitted that we've moved beyond containment to delay.

I'm concerned that most people are under the false illusion that it'll all be fine to just carry on. The amount of people I've watched coughing all over the place in the last couple of days, people are just so ignorant of reality.

We need to move ahead of the curve rather than waiting for the curve before steering.

I am taking an evidence based approach. Looking at what the Chinese and Koreans have done shows clear evidence that where movement has been restricted the effects are positive.

What you're looking at is an opinion based on modelling.

If we don't change anything, nothing changes.

Tbf the Korean analogy is out but in terms of Wuhan and China they have seemingly got on top of it.

Unclear what evidence you have to the contrary?

Tbf it does entirely depend on which expert you listen to.
Basically no one knows, not even the experts, and everyone is just guessing

There is barely any evidence because it's brand new.

A few days ago I was completely naive to this.

Now, I think we should take action. All of the experts are saying that we can reduce the impact of this by taking these social reduction steps that the Chinese, Korean and Singapore governments have taken.

One month of school/academic shutdown, work from home when possible and quarantining if you have so much as a cold. It does not mean society will stop, but if less people are out and about then it'll stop the spread. It'll push this virus into spring/summer when it is likely to be less transmissable. A few weeks of sensible but quite strict guidelines could save your elderly/poorly relatives in the long term. It's 100% worth it. I'd rather we overreact and take the economic hit than underreact and take the hit in bodies.

There is actually no good evidence that the transmission of this virus is season / temperature dependent.

However, we do know seasonal influenza is, so by delaying coronavirus to spring / summer, our healthcare resources will be less stretched by not having to handle both diseases at once.

This graph summarises it nicely, and shows why it’s not a good idea to ‘just accept it will infect everyone and get it over with’

If you close all schools, how many doctors and nurses are going to have to be at home to look after children?

What the Chinese have done works at the minute but I am expert on 5 Live made a good point yesterday, they might see a second peak when they decide to go about their normal business again.

Could they not have matched the data range? What a weird way to present it. They've got completely different scales, starting at different points, one in chunks of 10 years the other in some randomly picked age range.
