No political discussion in this topic. That is complaining about a country, a politician, a party and/or its voters, etc

I remember working in Glenfield Co-op in 2003 the first morning after the shock and awe bombing in Iraq. In a few hours we'd sold out of milk, bread, eggs and bottled water. By the end of the day we'd sold out of loads of things - including anything drinkable (it wasn't a small co-op). That was because of something happening a halfway around the world against a country that had no realistic chance of effecting us.

Around the same time the space shuttle Columbia disaster happened. A rumour started going around that Bin Laden or Saddam had shot it down and people were saying to us WW3 was about to start. :crylaugh:Again we started selling out of bottled water and other things.

People would be raging at us when we told them we'd sold out. And I mean raging.

People are stupid!

I've had this today, bog roll gone by lunch time, soap before that. Before I left tissues were empty as we're parecetomol and drink and food ailes looking really bare.

Been so busy today I can only compare it to the Xmas rush. Crazy

ABC news (Australia), but trust me, shelves are empty in many places of some staples. No one's going to die of starvation, but you might have to change your diet a little and wipe your bum with kitchen roll.

Stuff that, I’m not going soft for anyone. I’ll stick with the sun. Read em and wipe

How exactly has Italy become a hotspot? Is it the skiing or something

Yes. Was half term for skiing trips and there was a biggish comp going on too.

Due to go to Northern Italy at the beginning of July.

If the situation doesn’t improve I won’t be bothering and will just take the hit on flights and hotels etc.

Saw something on Twitter from a data scientist the other day about based on the number of exported infections from into other countries  italy, the actual number of cases there was likely underestimated by a factor of 3.5-4 by the end of feb.

Edit: Found it https://twitter.com/AdamJKucharski/status/1236004937529798659?s=20

This us now coming home to roost. We will soon be facing something similar somewhere in the UK pretty soon.

The journalistic and political scaremongering really annoys me. Yes it's possible this could become pandemic, which means it's an infection that involves every continent on earth, even if it's only 1 confirmed case on that continent. However, let's get things in perspective; European flu killed nearly 2,000 people in the UK last year, so far 3, yes THREE, people have died in this country from Corona virus. The statement from the DoH, quoted in the Independent, suggested that this thing could kill 800,000 people in the UK "IN THE WORST CASE SCENARIO", which will never materialise, has been jumped on by the press and they sensationalise it and push the fear factor as if it was the Black Plague all over again.

What they should be repeating over and over again is that basic hygiene will contain it. Wash your hands regularly. If you have symptoms and you've recently returned from foreign travel, don't use public transport, don't go shopping, don't go to any health care facility. Stay at home and phone 111 for advice.

The people most at risk are the elderly, particularly those with respiratory illnesses or pre-existing conditions that might be a factor in their ability to fight the illness and that's just the same as for European flu. There's no need to panic despite the press wanting it.

To an extent but you are comparing a full years worth of data against a few weeks, and you are also comparing  a disease that is pretty much unregulated to one that has attempted to be contained.

I agree it’s not the apocalypse but we all need to be mindful.

Italy has today made the decision to do a China-style lockdown.

Things are getting (even more) serious now.

It has taken just two weeks from the initial reports of cases coming out from northern Italy.

I don’t think so  - not sure any of the areas above are ski regions.

simply that some business travellers/tourists  have brought the virus back to the regions listed above and a lack of any control has led it to spread widely in those areas over a two week period before anyone realised what was going on ..... something similar could be happening here now - we will know within a week or two !

If. these measures begin to show positive results in slowing the spread of the virus  ( as they did in China) then expect other countries to be more aggressive in ‘quarantining’ large areas sooner !

That's shit. I have a lot of friends in Northern Italy and it's totally surreal. Have two English friends running a B&B in northern Marche, not far from the border with Emilia-Romagna which has had a lot of cases. They had enough on their plate as it was but this is going to be devastating.

There are estimations that the current northern Italy and Washington outbreaks started in mid to late January, but were not picked up due to a lack of testing. They only realised two weeks ago once they exported cases elsewhere and people started to die.

We have been testing far more widely in the UK and the first community transmissions (people with no travel history) in the UK were only a week ago, so I’d expect the situation here to be at least 5-6 weeks behind those areas - hopefully longer as we continue to test extensively.

Although the UK government has now stopped reporting the number of cases in returned travellers vs the number of cases acquired in the UK, which is annoying.

I’m hearing plenty about lock downs in Northern Italy but the governments travel advice hasn’t changed there, only avoid them 11 small towns.

Why would they do that?

Oh there we go, Breaking on Sky News that Lombardy is going on lockdown.

Really serious era-defining stuff now. Like a slow motion 9/11. I don't think it'll get to that point here. At the moment ourselves, France & Germany are below the curve in comparison to Italian cases and there are no particular hot spot areas in the UK which signifies they've done a good job of detecting/quarantining so far. However we'll find out for sure in the next couple of weeks.

Tbh, what's devastating is living in a council estate with no hope of ever travelling beyond Skeggy and not being able to afford to stockpile for a few weeks as you've got a zero hours contract and you've been told to self-isolate for two weeks.

That account is a bot. Not saying that the things being said on it aren't true however given that it's coming from a bot, it could be deliberately spreading misinformation. This is partly why this situation feels incredibly volatile.

Did some digging, the original source is from a mailing list for critical care doctors.

But yes it’s difficult for lay people to separate misinformation from the truth.

I’ve spent far too many hours reading about the outbreak every day since early Jan. It’s exhausting trying to keep up.

Surprised how callous many seem to have become over this, they were just interviewing a young couple on sky in London and they said nothing would change for them as their age meant they would be ok even if they got it.

Do these people not have parents, grandparents or other elderly relatives?

Even if you have no worries yourself maybe a good idea to exercise concern for your fellow citizens and realise how important it is to do everything possible not to spread something that could potentially kill millions of people?

So few people have it though.

Maybe younger people are more able to focus in on the realism in numbers and zone out of the media's nonsense? Just a thought.
