https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-daily-deaths/

Says 81,854 people have tested positive and died in England in total.

By age:

0 - 19 years of age: 36 (0.04%)

20 - 39 years of age: 553 (0.67%)

40 - 59 years of age: 5730 (7%)

60 - 79 years of age: 31,176 (38%)

80+ years of age: 44,359 (54.1%) EDITED: Previously said 51.1%.

No mention of underlying conditions in that, nor obesity levels etc. Just proves how the 'lockdown until everyone has been vaccinated' crowd need to be ignored from this point onwards.

How quickly we seem to have got used to this level of mortality. Just compare the 40 - 59 age group (5,730) with the total number of road deaths in 2019 (1,752). Time was when we used to think this was rather distressing.

I’m not one of those who thinks that lockdown should continue until everyone is vaccinated, but the scientists clearly believe there is danger in opening up too fast. Should have thought that by now, with everything that has a happened over there, people would be better advised to listen to them.

To be fair, most do. Its just a loud minority that dont.

I think the balance on the timeframes for opening up in Englanf is about right. Not rushed or held up needlessly with leeway into moving dates if projections change over time.

Yep. It's a disgrace. What even is their justification for it?

Oh I dunno -  something to do with that highly virulent zoonotic disease and subsequent pandemic perhaps?

Scientists who nobody had heard of before this and general bedwetters will do their best to prolong this hell as long as they can

Too right. Away with them and their foul and pesky immunology, virology and epidemiology - and don't get me started on their vaccines. Who cares though? - no one has heard of them anyway.

Matt Hancock always does his zooms from a small, gloomy looking room painted dark red all over, including the bookshelves. Somehow, I'd expect a senior cabinet minister to have a more impressive environment for his video conferencing. Btw, with many of the zooms we've witnessed on the news over the last 11 months, I've repeatedly found myself trying to see what books the politicians and medics have on their bookshelves. It's a great way to learn about them a bit more. One of MH's books is a thick tome on the Science Museum.

I read (somewhere) that there are companies who specialise in supplying books to make you bookshelf look sexier/cooler/cleverer in the background of your zoom calls!

Yvette Amos didn't get the memo though....

The summer music festivals seem confident all will be well as they have announced they are going ahead.

It is very encouraging to hear this sort of thing. I just hope that everything carries on going so well with the vaccines etc and we can follow the "roadmap".

Maybe the PM could do a zoom session with well-thumbed copies of Escort and Razzle visible on his bookshelf in the background!

I’m not normally a pessimist but am still concerned that over time the variants beat the vaccines

Another way of looking at it is that for every variant, the scientists learn more about the virus and therefore over time they will be able to create a vaccine which is fully protective.

Equally there’s a chance that it goes variant/change too many and becomes a weaker threat.

Yeah, I realise that it could go that way and hopefully it will. The negative thought is probably fuelled by lockdown fatigue 👍

So we’re (Leicester) fourth in the table of highest  infection rates and the government have not ruled out localised lockdowns.

Mass testing in North West Leicestershire also to take place. The region having one of the worse infection rates.

We know what’s coming Mark.  I can see it now. The June re opening of the Uk with Leicester back where it belongs in lockdown.  The holidays all cancelled from LE postcodes. The Leicester lepers part two.

I know what you mean - perfectly understand the optimism from the dates but we’ve been here before, so just still keeping my head down
