Only 5,461 in total and 748 on ventilators.

Lowest it's been since October.

That's 0.0082% and 0.0011% of the population respectively.

2,495 cases yesterday. Lowest since mid-September.

0.0037% of the population. Not seeing any wave after schools opened up as many predicted.

Less than 0.5 people on ventilators for each hospital in the country.

I found comments regarding "data" interesting in today's press conference.  "In hindsight we wish we had the data to make informed decisions from the outset."  Really?  As the data has become established, they've moved further away from it and continually based decisions on projections not data.  They're doing it right now with the 3rd wave narrative.

I have to admit I found this evenings press brief really quite crap.

Boris seemed nervous as fook. I don’t think anything was really ‘answered’ particularly. It was a purely political stage-show and even that wasn’t done very well.

This was hugely apparent when the journo asked the question about the UK having one of the worst death rates and infection rates across the globe. Boris simply again said the pandemic isn’t over and there’s no point making international comparisons.

And of I hear the term ‘lessons need to be learnt’ once more I’m gonna scream

I was singularly unimpressed tonight apart from the info on the vaccines which of course gives us all immense hope.

Standard. Basically just words with no substance.

It's like they know something but don't want to spread panic just yet. The fact that there will need to be booster jabd is concerning. Do they give them to all 60+ million people again? Do they only give the most vulnerable a top up? Are they leaving flu jabs out, have they got capacity? What about potential health cards/passports if only some people get a booster?

Lots of questions but no answers yet.

I do find it somewhat baffling that on the news we’re told that vaccines are 100% effective for preventing serious illness and now that half of the adult population are partially vaccinated and the most vulnerable are starting to get fully vaccinated but we still can’t do fvck all.

The data on effectiveness is based on people that have had two jabs?

remember that it takes three weeks for the first jab to be effective to any decent extent .....we’ve jabbed a lot of people within the past three weeks .....  they’re currently being overly cautious based on the schools re opening.  If the data is as good as it currently looks then the next staging post is 12h April (deliberate to avoid Easter being overly sociable ).  two to three weeks after that to see what effect that has on cases (and ore importantly, hospitalisations)

it seems to be all about not having to re introduce any restrictions

I think the various government schemes have helped to keep people in employment, especially self-employed people in the hospitality industry. However, I don't think the real effects of that will show for a couple of years. Once the funding dries up and the various loans need to be paid back, it is hard to forecast how those people will cope. FIngers crossed business picks up over the next few years again and they can thrive again. It may just be that profits in those sectors are much lower than maybe hoped but as long as those people can survive and stay in business, that would be a result.

The rent ‘holidays’ and suspension of law from landlords to chase that are really going to hit hard. There are numerous chain shops which have maintained not paying rent despite being open throughout the pandemic. Landlords are increasingly peeved

Suspect this is to do with the amount of under 35 year olds in retail and service industries.

Partly that, but even the ones who aren't will generally be in less crucial roles to their business which are easier to do without.   Then simply retrain and replace the position when our lord and saviour the economy starts flowing again.

So fed up of life now - think I speak for most when I say I don’t think I can take a third wave and more restrictions.

Totally agree. I don’t get these lockdown forever weirdos who are obsessed with covid.
To be honest if the restrictions were to continue through this year and into next I’d rather be dead than carry on “ living “ like this.

Absolutely share your feelings.

But I remain hopeful that, even if there is a third wave, the success of the vaccination campaign will mean we avoid further restrictions - except, perhaps, no foreign holidays until autumn due to rising rates/slow vaccination on the continent?

Even if infection rates rise in the UK, those infected should mainly be those least vulnerable to severe illness, hospitalisation & death. So that probably wouldn't justify changing the roadmap for leaving lockdown.

Plus, any increase in infections due to society unlocking or to infection surges abroad should be offset by ever-increasing levels of vaccination (& quarantining of foreign travelers, to some extent).

Just so long as we don't get seriously unlucky with a new vaccine-resistant variant either appearing in the UK or arriving from abroad.... :fc:

There are 6 other coronaviruses that affect humans, and have been for donkeys' years.  None of them have mutated into something deadly, though there is speculation that one of them mutated away from a coronavirus pandemic like we are having now, but in the late 1800's.

A woman at my work has booked a holiday abroad...in May. I have to admire the hope of some people. May seems way too early to book anything. Even June seems a bit far off.

It's not living it's existing at the minute sadly.

Hopefully will change in the coming weeks/months :fc:

I understand your points but I think people are allowed to hate their life because of the restrictions but still at the same time understand that coronavirus is a disease that we need to do our upmost to control.

Completely - but declaring that you'd rather be dead, even if it was not intended seriously shouldn't be said lightly given that the toll that lockdown is taking on people's mental health. If he is genuinely experiencing those feelings, that he needs to speak to someone as opposed to posting on a football forum.

Regarding these supposed "lockdown weirdos" - I'd be most intrigued to see some examples. Unless of course this is referring to buffoons inhabiting junk social media sites which I completely disregard and so should you. Those that are informed are recommending extreme caution, that's all. This is what science tells us.

I genuinely don't think that current generations comprehend the sacrifices and the toll exacted upon society and this country during WWI and WWII.

I’d rather be fighting a war then this pandemic rubbish. A war gives you purpose and is kind of exciting.

I promise you, IF in the last 12 months, 126,000 people had been murdered on our streets due to an invading force that could spring up anywhere, you wouldn't be wanting to go to the pub.  We would all be hiding in our houses, barricaded in. But because it's a virus and people think "won't affect me", they just see it as a big inconvenience.

Even in my own friendship group, I see people disregarding the restrictions all the time.  One of our friends has travelled to stay in London, with her parents,  when her father HAD covid.  She stayed 3 days then came home.  She then saw her new boyfriend.

He, incidentally, had spent the previous night, in a caravan on farmland playing poker with six of his mates.

She then couldn't comprehend it when we said we didn't want to see her.... "but you are allowed to go for a walk outside"...... yeah, but not when you have been so flagrant with the restrictions!

My brother in law happily shared that he'd seen 6 sets of parents on Mothers day. breathtakingly irresponsible.

I haven't seen my parents for 6 months. They live 3 miles away. Ultimately, I don't want to put them at risk.

All we can do is control our own actions, but i see the actions of so many others and it just makes me want to give their face a wobble.
