A eye watering 123 deaths declared today in the UK

What I do find eye watering and a stat I never knew was so high, especially at this time of year. There were 300 odd deaths due to covid week ending the tenth, but there were 900 odd deaths due to the flu! Something I’ve never had before but I Wonder how many people actually catch the flu.

Hundreds. Really. It's a year long killer and gets much worse during winter but still has peaks during summer for those with pre-existing respiratory conditions particularly associated with allergies

How accurate is all this drive by testing they are doing? Whenever I see it being carried out during news bulletins etc. they seem to be just swabbing the mouth.

Well, I've been chosen at random for a national study into the prevalence of covid-19 and the swab is bloody long. The instructions show it going in through the nose and right to the back of your nasal passage. :o

Apparently that's where the germs are.

As far as I know, initially the swab was meant to be inserted through the nose, down to the tonsils. When I went to be tested, the instructions said to go through the mouth, still down to the tonsils though. Then a swab around the nostril approx. 20-25mm up.

Phew!  That's alright then. I'll go ahead and volunteer.

That might be ok for daneilla Westbrook with her dodgy nose but fvck that.
Seriously though, my daughter had the test cos I was giving her some grief about going the pub and she reckons the swab up your nose wasn’t  as bad as it looks and she’s normally squeamish with that sort of thing

900 in the week ending July 10th, whether that means for the year or the one week, I don’t know

Had the week off and been out for lunch twice, two varying experiences.

Tuesday sat outside, tables well spaced apart, ordered drinks and meals at the bar, collected condiments (individual sachets) and cutlery inside and took them out to the table. Food delivered to the table pretty much as normal. Hand sanitizer and social distancing signs everywhere, nice, relaxed atmosphere and very enjoyable. Spent four hours catching up with a couple of friends.

Thursday sat inside, tables again well spaced apart, hand sanitizer, social distancing, disposable menus. Table service waitress stood some distance away and took the order. Drinks, condiments and cutlery turned up on a tray placed on table and we had to remove everything ourselves, waitress kept her distance. Similar experience with the card machine at the end. If they could have served the food on one of those pizza oven boards they would have done. Had to shuffle the plates over at the end for them to be collected. It was table service with a self service element.

The Tuesday experience wasn’t that far removed from a pre Covid meal, the Thursday meal was everything that was putting me off eating out, it just wasn’t a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Skipped dessert and coffee as  I just wanted to get away.

I went out for a meal on Wednesday. I kinda liked the extra spacing between tables. Has added privacy tbh. Especially as the table next door was a big hefferlump. Would've put me right off my dinner.

Went out for drinks after. weird experience of nipping into a bar and being turned away athhe bar itself due to capacity being reached. Next gaff was fine, table service and staff were excellent.

When I got tested at Birstall they got no where near that far up my nose. Wasn't even uncomfortable. No surprise I came back negative if that's how it's supposed to be done. lol

Who on earth thought opening nightclubs was a good idea given the outbreaks that they saw in Seoul. Ideal transmission site for covid.

Could not agree more.  The sector clearly, and understandably, carries clout in local situations.  Why else would the leader of the public health in Madrid say that they will “review” next week the nightlife situation in his community (i.e. in Madrid).

The Regions have had control devolved to them and obviously difficult local decisions are more easily influenced.  The Government (National) needs to keep an eye on it.  Catalyuna is not in a good place but you will hear the howls of protest should the national government feel it has to step in. The Catalyunan administration, as well as Aragon (and others), need to step up to the plate and be seen to do so.

The death rate is a lag indicator and by the time deaths increase, it’s too late

A few weeks ago US cases began to shoot up and trumps people said - ‘yeah but deaths are level’ .......now we see daily deaths 950/1150

Yep, recognise this.  However it is interesting when you delve into the figures made available.  For the week, up to 23 July, the following is relevant:

10,990 confirmed cases

327 required hospitalisation, 14 of which required ICU.

10 persons passed away.

Not yet a crisis, for sure.  However the extended family remains alive and well here as can be seen in restaurants up and down the country on Sunday afternoons.

What happens when the young nightclub goer (most probably showing no symptoms) subsequently meets with older family members?  Might see that lag develop

Which is presumably why they remain shut

the biggest problem is clearly when the weather changes and people cannot socialise outside ........ we will have more data by then of the long term impacts on those that have had it ..... my two twenty somethings who were fairly blasé three months ago when they had it are long recovered but both have a different palate and judge that their enjoyment of food is diminished .......  so whilst the vast majority that catch it will have a muted experience of being ill, they too could suffer long after  in ways they don’t expect.

Something lost in translation here ☺️.  I was talking about here in Spain where they are very much open.

I take your point though and the Seoul example, quoted previously by Lionator, has been very illustrative of how the heat generated within a confined indoor space looks like a good breeding ground for cross contamination.  Has Spain learnt from Seoul, evidently not.  At present the UK has resisted the opening and can watch the outcome here (I have already said it is being cited as one of the three reasons for the current spike).

Obviously this post is an inconvenience rather than the bigger problems faced by people but its going to be annoying having to effectively to a soft self isolation 2 weeks before doing something you feel that you cant miss out on or pre booked trips.

We're going to see family for the first time since March in a couple of weekends so basically means, bar going to the shop for food, me and the missus are socialising with anyone or eating /drinking out etc.

Also meeting mates for a weekend away within the UK in October will be doing the same thing again to ensure I can make it. Problem about that one is convincing the missus not to socialise for 2 weeks lol

One of the silver linings of lockdown was not having plans, or to plan anything more than a day or two in advance. Was hoping to maintain a scenario post lockdown where diaries were kept clear with ad hoc plans being the way forwad but it looks like we'll have the opposite issue for a while.

Why are you doing that? Isolating yourself I mean.

Reasoning being that I dont want to get a message saying I've been in a pub / restaurant at the same time as someone who has tested positive and asked to self isolate for 2 weeks which might mean missing out on something I've booked/paid for.

Maybe I'm being over the top, but only doing it for those two things this year as they are things I want to avoid missing if I can and I've booked/paid for. If I miss anything else then so be it.

It makes sense and if those events are important to you then fair enough.
