All time Favourite Midfielder

Recommended Posts

Keith Weller would have to be the best of all time.

Kevin MacDonald was really underrated.

Ali McAllister (they were really one player)

Izzy Lennon (same as above)

But now it has to be Hamza Choudhury.

Not sure he'd be considered a midfielder in this day and age, you'd probably call him a "number 10" nowadays, but I'm going to say Zico. It's often forgotten just how good that Brazilian side in the early 80s was, better than the 94 WC winning side (Romario aside of course). He was sublime to watch in that World Cup.

Always liked Lothar Mattheus too. In more recent years I think Bastian Schweinsteiger was a great player in a similar role for years.

I think all the UEFA shenanigans have tarnished his footballing reputation somewhat, but its oft forgotten that Platini was pure class.

My first World Cup was Espana 82. That french team was special.

For our own, I'd say Gary Mac. I was only young, but I feel he was a little underrated when he was with us. Showed his class after he left LCFC and seemed to just get better and better. In his mid thirties he simply was stellar with Liverpool.

One of the most underrated players in my lifetime, Brian Laudrup:

Won the Champions League and League at Barcelona before he had a falling out with Johan Cruyff, who had him on the bench as Milan smashed them 4-0 in the 1994 final. Then he transferred to Real Madrid where he won the league, enroute to beating Barcelona 5-0.

The guy had it all, technique, touch, style, grace, passing, intelligence, could use either foot, fast, strong, etc.

As Laudrup was more of a 10 than a regular midfielder, then I would plump for this guy, Andrea Pirlo:

Pirlo was just a phenomenal player. He was 30 seconds if not more ahead of anyone else on the pitch, always knowing what was going on. He was not the most physical or fast, but his sheer football IQ was something else.

As for us, we have been blessed with a fair few amazing ones, but without any shadow of a doubt it has to be the club icon that is Muzzy Izzet! What. A. Player.

Esteban Cambiasso is also worth a shout. He was class at age 34. IMO had he been in this league at the age of 28 he would have won player of the year. He was in the same category as Vieria, Keane and Scholes. In fact IMO he combined the defensive work of the first two with the class and playmaking ability of the latter, making a very rare breed indeed.

Brian Laudrup? Not even the best midfielder in his family 😂.

Michael now we’re talking a player and I think I posted his name in another thread recently and one of the best player I’ve ever seen, had everything and was a real joy to watch.

My favourite has to be Neil Lennon.  The heart and soul of O'Neill's team.

Honourable mentions to Draper, Muzzy, MacAllister, Steve Thompson, Kante and Cambiasso.

Wilf and Youri, legends in the making.

Favourite non-Leicester would be Zidane.

My favourite LCFC midfielder would be Steve Guppy

My favourite non LCFC midfielder would be Steve Guppy, when he didn't play for Leicester.  If I can't have him, I'm going Roy Keane.  I know he is a pratt now but what a player.

Although it wasn't all that often for me, there was always something majestic about watching Nedved play.

Zidane was just a machine.

Got a soft spot for Lampard and his ability to get in goal scoring positions and he comes across as a genuinely sound guy.

Kante for us - what's not to love about the dude? (apart from him leaving

Iniesta for me from abroad. Always felt he was an incredible player to watch. Glides past opponents and passing was incredible.

For us - grew up watching Neil Lennon. What a player he was, gutted when he moved to Celtic.

Premier League player - Scholes. Always looked 1 step ahead of everyone he played against.

I think he meant Michael, Brian didn’t play for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

What a great video, thanks for sharing.

He was a little before my time, though his name was familiar. From the video you can see his quality, such a languid style, two-footed also.

Ridiculously talented. Imagine having both him and Beckenbauer in the same team.
