The guy is a holding midfield player, on a small wage, and is a miles better player than Choudhury as the lone defensive midfield player in a 4-3-3. He adds composure off the bench to see out games.

 

It's going to cost you £15m to replace him with someone as good, and how do you convince someone to come here to sit on the bench and play a dozen games in cup games and the like?

 

Every club needs decent squad players. Mendy is one.

But if we are ever going to improve, we have to do exactly that.

Why would he want to resign? While different Preat / Choudhury between them offer flexibility in the centre of the park behind Ndiddi and Tielmans.  James is then 5th choice

Midfielder set to agree Leicester City deal - report

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after his contract expired

Leicester City are reportedly close to agreeing a new contract with midfielder Papy Mendy.

Mendy is currently a free agent after his previous deal with the Foxes expired following last weekend's final game of the season against Manchester United.

LeicestershireLive reported on Monday that talks over a new contract were ongoing.

Last week, City boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed he wanted to extend the 28-year-old's stay at the King Power Stadium.

“(The contract talks) are something that is continuing," said Rodgers.

"He (Mendy) is a really important player for the squad and he’s someone I’d like to keep.”

At one stage, it had looked like the Frenchman would be released at the end of the four-year deal he signed when arriving from Nice in 2016.

But due to his increased involvement, the bumper campaign next season, and possibly because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, it is looking like he could remain in the East Midlands.

Now, according to Foot Mercato, the two parties are close to reaching an agreement over a new contract.

The report adds that there has been interest in Mendy from other clubs, including Bordeaux.

The former Monaco man made eight appearances in all competitions for the Foxes during the 2019-20 campaign.

It's 100% cos it's a cheaper option than going out and finding a replacement so the money can be spent elsewhere.

Makes no sense to offer a new deal. That’ll be extensions for Morgan Fuchs Jakupovic and Mendy none of which are good enough to be playing, they’ll just be taking up space on the subs bench meaning less options to change a game.

I'd be interested to know if any another club has offered him anything like what we have. He's obviously been waiting for a better offer which hasn't materialised so far, even though he is out of contract

I like Mendy but we seem very top heavy in central midfield. 

 

Surely Tielemans, Wilf, Praet and Choudhury with the never ending contract of James should be more than enough.... and Mendy off frees up 30k a week for another position

Mendy has played more this season than those 3 combined for 2 seasons. Silva isn't a holding mid, Amartey hasn't gotten over that ankle and James isn't a sweeper. Mendy does the wilf job but to not the standard. He is great cover and does a good job. A replacement costs £10/15mill and then needs to settle etc.

When in 4-3-3 (which we played all season until half the defence got injured), we play one holding player and two 8s.

 

Ndidi and Mendy are the only two actual holding players at the club, because Choudhury is shit at it. Praet, Choudhury, Tielemans and Maddison are our four options at no.8, and we will likely bring in another attacking option there this summer. That would be 7 players for three positions, which is typical Rodgers given he said last summer in pre-season he likes to have extra midfield bodies in the 25 man squad.

 

James is not a holding player and will almost surely be leaving for football this summer.

Praet played in a deeper role in a diamond for Sampdoria in his last couple of games there but he was always going to come here as cover for Tielemans as a no.8.

 

The club can and probably will subsidise James' wages for the final year of his contract, or even waive any transfer fee - if he doesn't get a move then I don't believe he would stay in the 25 man squad anyway, and would be sidelined like King under Puel.

Not annoyed by this, would like Diallo from Brest as competition for Ndidi but given we need a CB, RW and a striker before we consider additional cover at DCM and AM then this is sensible.
