Guest ttfn Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 People are kidding themselves if they don’t think us making the Champions League makes a difference to us keeping him. It’s more money to pay him closer to what he deserves, more money and more prestige to attract other players of a not totally dissimilar calibre. He might have left anyway but it may well take our chances of retaining him from 7/10 to 5/10.
baldeagle Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 What a class player . Love him to stay for at least 1 more season but holding on to him is going to be difficult.
Blue ROI Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 That ending could be painful for losing Youri as much as anything else. He owes us nothing if he goes though.
21st Century Fox Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 (edited) Just bang all the FBS money in his account now! Edited 23 May 2021 by 21st Century Fox 1
filbertway Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 Give the man Fuchs and Morgan's wages and make him captain and promise him that he'll never have to step foot on a pitch with Perez, Amartey, Albrighton, Mendy or Hamza ever again. That might just do it 3

That's why we've made it our priority to try and push the commercial revenue harder as it takes more than just the odd CL qualification. We'll also get £20-25m from Europa anyway if we are better equipped next season to go a bit further...

Do whatever it takes to keep him he is class. Sign 3-4 players of his quality? We simply don’t have the finances. He’s one of the best midfielders in the world

The club might be making all the right moves off the pitch but a year in the CL gives us a platform to at least maintain a challenge for the top 4 again next season. Top 4 is not and should never be as important for us as winning Cups. But getting and retaining players capable of doing that is likely to be contingent on the occasional injection of cash that the odd year in the CL can provide.

If us and Man City are in the champs league and we offer him £150k and them £300k where the **** is he going? I don't think anyone thinks the CL guarantees he stays, but it gives us more of chance of holding on to players who are good enough to play in that competition. Our problems this season didn't lie in the quality we had, but the lack of depth in the squad. We said the same thing last season. 1
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 Ramifications of today's result really could be the difference between him staying and going. There's no doubt the lad deserves champs league football. I just pray he signs a new deal before the Euros because if he doesn't and plays how we all know he can, the offers will be pouring in and we'll have no chance of keeping him. Make him top or joint top paid player and give him the captaincy kmo it's the only way we have a shred of a chance of keeping him here. 3
RowlattsFox Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 Imagine how good he'd be if he had something Infront of him other than the ball over the top. I guess that's we had with Belgium.

I can only assume he hasn’t signed a new contract because he wanted to see where we would be heading next season and what offers are on the table 1

That extra £40-50m this summer could be the difference between us significantly upgrading Perez and Mendy and not. If we have to sell Tielemans we will have the same problem we had when we sold Mahrez. No reliable creative options in midfield and an entire team rebuild needed to replace one player as there’s no realistic prospect of attracting a replacement anywhere near his level. It would set us back 2 years.

Conjecture obviously, but it's daft to think having champions league football won't be a massive motivator in the decision a top player will make in regards to his future. Just another grim sub plot in today's gutting events. 3

But the club won't build their model on that, I wish we could have held on and qualified and been another £30-40m better off but we will be aggressive at recruiting this summer.

Kante left us when we were literally league champions for a bigger club who finished 10th.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 In regards to youri its not the financial implication on missing out on the champs league we have our model and we wouldn't pay him 250k a week (random bloated number) whether we qualified or not, I doubt it really affects the direct wage we want to pay youri (obviously by and large affects all financial decisions to some extent). The issue is youri is a champions league quality player who should be playing champions league football and now he won't get that here. It could well be the difference between us holding on to him for another 1 or 2 years and him jumping ship this summer. 3
Mickyblueeyes Posted 23 May 2021 Posted 23 May 2021 Hope he stays one more year. He is a class above.

We managed to keep the whole of the rest of the squad together even though 4 or 5 would have been on the shopping list of the other big clubs. It’s not a binary equation, people are saying it makes it more likely, not that it is a certainty.

I would imagine the conversation was had about making CL at the end of last season, we just have to hope that the calibre of players the club are looking at bring in persuade youri that next season we'll better our position, but yes, there are a number clubs that if come calling for youri, he's gone, the teams ww are competing with, it's like we're climbing a slippery pole whilst the other teams have rungs to climb, we perhaps have to accept that there is a glass ceiling and we're at it, that's my take anyway.
