David Pleat did sign him a year later but for Luton.I don’t think he fancied him or Thompson didn’t fancy Luton.As after 5 games we swapped him for Des Linton and another up and comer.(Oakes?)
With the transfer windows now,you don’t get this situation where clubs make mistakes and immediately ship out after a handful of matches.It happened quite often.

I remember being quite excited when we signed him from Celtic, only played a couple of games for us through with nothing he did really standing out.

Wasn’t he in quite a bad car crash which ended everything for him?

First part definitely right. Maybe even scored twice? I thought he'd be good for us but, like every weekly signing we seemed to make at that time, he wasn't.

I was about to say Jason Jarrett. Hopeless. And wasn’t Andy Johnson on a free the sole signing of the pre season that year?
