Incredibly, he's playing Lingard in tomorrows friendly despite him not making the squad.

I can't even explain it. What is the rationale behind that?

What's the rationale of announcing this squad at all without the friendly games being played? At least give them something to play for.

Only think I can think is that if we’re playing a 4-2-1-3, all the other options for that ‘1’ aren’t back yet (Mount, Foden). Could probably play Bellingham there though, or try Grealish

Mount, Sterling, Foden all probably not there yet but still If I was Lingard I'd feel a tight hamstring. Waste of his time. Credit to his professionalism though I guess.

Might be because of the Man City and Chelsea players not there? There won’t be any Stones, Walker, Foden, Sterling, Chilwell, Mount, Henderson & Maguire as well.

What I really don’t get is our obsession with taking players that have been and aren’t fully fit. It seems to happen every tournament.

For those saying about the midfield looking week. What are the other options that are actually realistic? For me it’s pretty clear the plan is to with a back 5.

Ward-Prowse instead of Saka would be my choice.

Still plenty of options at WB or winter even if Saka doesn't go.

Yeah but would you be starting him over any of the other central midfielders?

Surely the obvious answer here is to ditch one of the right backs and/or Saka and take JWP and Lingard.

Even still you'd surely just play someone else who is going. Just seems absolutely pointless to play somebody you've left out of the squad. I'd be surprised if any other team in the competition did that at this stage.

Southgate has a presser at 6. Look forward to hearing his cagey answers then.

Southgate can hide behind the extra 3 players but we know he'd have taken Maguire and Henderson anyway. Maguire I'm fine with because He's not been out too long but Henderson has been out months.

Exactly, surely use it as an opportunity to maybe experiment? He's talked about TAA in midfield today (though pretty sure he's only done that to justify 4 RBs), but why not use this as a chance to try that out? Or try Grealish from deeper?

What if Lingard has an absolute stormer, what then? Just seems very odd.

Don't really have too much of an issue with the squad but as I said previously I think it's daft that we are going to play a half fit Maguire and Henderson with no game practice. England have done this repeatedly with Rooney and Beckham - it doesn't work.

Granted it’s really weird.

Amazing that we are the only club in the top 11 of the PL without a single player in the squad. Maybe explains why I have so little connection with this squad.

I don’t like it either but to be fair they are all injured/need of rest so it kind of rules us out.

Yeah if Barnes carried his form and fitness through to the end of the season even Southgate wouldn't have been able to ignore him. Probably would have been ahead of Saka.

4 right backs, 2 left backs and 3 holding CM.

2 Strikers, who are very similar and have no pace.

Most inform player not taken in Lingard.

And a number of injured players, with no game time.

Classic England.

I'm just worried that a lucky run to the semi's will give us another 4 years of Southgate.

Would anybody take getting binned out at the group stage just to ensure it meant a new manager?
