10 defenders and 5 midfielders, as listed. Really does seem insane. He's definitely taken some of those defenders because of the fall out he would receive from media, fans and possibly even their clubs if he didn't. Seems transparently weak management.

Wasn't overly excited by our prospects before, less so now. The balance of that squad just seems all wrong. 

Oh well, fingers crossed and all that. It's coming home.

Taking Henderson I kind of get. There's no real leaders among that lot, he's basically it. We don't know what he adds off the pitch. I can imagine he's somebody who can rally the team and do half of Southgate's job for him. Even if he barely plays I can see he'd contribute a lot to the cohesion of the team. Maguire I have no idea. Even if he's fit I think he's a liability. So many games this season I kept thinking how are you still on the pitch, which will be made worse given he's not got the ManU badge to hide behind.

 

The defense looks really weak tbh. Stones has had a good season but he's had Dias organizing beside him. James being the only real defensive WB I'd trust and we saw what happens regarding any attack down that wing when he played us when the manager tells him to not go forward but focus on defense. 

 

It's a team that should make it out of the groups but I wonder what will happen if every team we face plays with a low block and attacks on the break. Any half decent team and manager can out-whit Southgate. He's even getting his excuses in early saying this isn't ideal, we really need more time yadda yadda... As long as we don't get dumped out in the quarters after playing well against a bunch of minnows and the media declare it a success. Just condemning us to more mediocrity as we see another "golden generation" pass.

The gap in quality between Maguire and Henderson their respective replacements is quite big so its worth taking them anyway given its a 26 man squad rather than 23

Absolutely not.
I don’t rate Southgate but to consider taking going out in the group stage so that he gets binned is absolutely bat sh*t crazy and weird. 
I want us to go as far as we can every tournament no matter what.

Maguire and Henderson have to be in the 26, the alternatives in their positions are pretty poor. Just got to hope they can get fit. We look very weak at centre half.

The most talented generation of players since the golden generation.....and we're sweating on maguire being fit? 🤣🤣

 

This squad is horrible, we have some talented youngsters and a striker who'll fill his boots against the weaker teams. Devoid of much quality though at the back though.
