Why would I not be?

Players in our squad are ranked on their ability, not the price we paid for them. Perez's ability lands him on our bench until we sign a right winger that would replace him.

Of course they are ranked on ability but when you break your transfer record for a player and they don't deliver then you've every right to expect more like I have done with many players before. Perez is currently our worst winger, striker and attacking midfielder that Brendan counts on and it really stings we've paid £30m for him.

But it essentially doesn't matter, does it?

Knew it was a mistake looking at this thread. The incessant criticism of one of our own players is extremely boring. I was at Chelsea in the mid 90s when their fans were shouting keep him on, as one of our players was subbed. We lost 5-0 and were flattered by that score. Some people need to get a grip and understand what sheer dross we have had at times to be able to appreciate someone who gives his all for his club. He may not be the most thrilling or dynamic player that we have, but he doesnt warrant incessant criticism.

In the context of what?

Of the squad that we currently have and his value to it.

We need Perez because of a lack of other options, not because he's a £30 million pound player.

I was at that one.  I think we were 2-0 down after 10 minutes.  I was sat next to a young girl who never looked up from her magazine all match after the second goal.

I’m not his biggest fan, but he is a regular starter in a top 5 premier league side that also just won the FA cup. He isn’t some bum. He wouldn’t be far from the top bracket as far as premier league squad rotation players go (if you exclude Man City). He would start at the majority of premier league clubs (I mean he is literally a starter for the 5th best team currently). But IMO we should be looking to sign a right winger and demoting him to more of a squad rotation role due to his relative lack of threat compared to our other attackers this past season.

There are some instances where he could/should start though. He has been better in AM roles than Maddison when we play a back 3, likely because Perez is significantly better off the ball than Maddison is.

I’d keep him for rotation, unless it’s absolutely necessary to raise funds to replace him with a more dangerous RW option. His original fee is immaterial now, can’t change it, it’s already paid. Stop worrying about it.

Nobody is saying, chin Perez off and not replace him. We are crying out for additions to right wing and ACM but the notion we cannot grumble about his output given we bought him to bring a lot of goals and assists is ridiculous. Maybe we've got our wires crossed here.

Baffling that anyone would want to get rid of him when we currently only own one right winger and two attacking midfielders (both spent significant time injured last season).

...it is more significant that, that scenario exist, and there is a wish for us, to divest ourselves of his services!!!

What we paid is completely irrelevant, don't be daft.

I expect 20-25 goals/assists from Harvey Barnes next season because he's at that level. He cost us nothing.

We often hear that his fee was not his fault which is true but to say it is irrelevant is ridiculous.

What we pay for a player directly affects what we are able to pay for others.  If we get it wrong as in the case of AP we are lumbered with a player that we cannot sell on or replace and who is several levels below the rest of his team mates.

Incidentally, I'm selling my car.  It has a Fred Flintstone style hole in the floor and it runs like it's farting the national anthem.  Would you like to buy it for ten grand?  It's not worth ten grand of course but that's irrelevant.

Perez is a player who needs a run of games to get going which he didnt get last season. That being said when he does get going he just tends to just pick up goals and assists against poor sides and when we're already up a goal or two. So he's not someone who can perform off the bench and he's not someone who will regularly win us games when he's in form, i dont know what his value is in the squad.

The money was paid years ago. It’s gone. What is the point in worrying about it now? It has no relevance to the current window unless he came with a returns policy that is still valid after 2-3 years.

He is perfectly good as a squad player for a top half PL side, he would start for most of the league. Too expensive when we got him? Sure, in hindsight, and it felt a lot at the time to me. But he is nowhere near some of our other disaster buys of the past 5 years or so.

I think everyone agrees he shouldn’t be our first choice RW, and if we get one in he will be playing a more appropriate role in our squad. Not much to worry about really, unless we fail to bring in a RW....

....there is a monetary value assigned to every player that the market works to!!!

The cost of a player would denote an expectancy of a valued return and failure to reach that expectancy leads to questions.

1. Did we pay too much

2. is there an issue in his fitness

3. Has he been afforded the best opportunity to excel (i.e. playing in his right position).

4. Can we in the long term make him better.

If we bought Harry Kane into the club, he would come with a certain level of expectancy, but bringing in Kabak at £8m would warrantee a feeling of squad depth and a lesser level of expectancy.

There is a market out there, we can not choose to ignore that there is a reason it exists.

Bottom line.
He didn’t set his price

We got it wrong

He is not delivering what a 30m player should deliver

Its still our fault

Hope he is sold and replaced with what we actually need
