Inspired by the other thread.

Like a lot of people I've managed to save quite a bit during the pandemic (apologies if that comes across as insensitive) and I'm thinking of taking a year away from my line of work. Thought about becoming a churchwarden, or work in a village pub, or a railway station cafe. Just something that doesn't involve looking at a screen, being round academics, or writing stuff outside of work hours. Something where I can live out in the countryside for a bit.

So what would be your ideal work conditions, and are you thinking of going for it?

If I didn't do what I do, I'd quite like to be a car detailer. It started as a lockdown hobby but I'm now finding myself doing friends, neighbors, and families cars and I really enjoy it (and I'm told I do a good job as I've got a keen eye for detail!)

I find taking someone's filthy, scratched, faded, shabby car and transforming it in a day through a proper deep cleaning and machine polishing process, strangely satisfying.

Don't think I'd ever do it for the money or a career change, but I'm seriously considering it as my major thing to do when I retire (and playing golf)

I have long wanted to be location independant, I think the last 18 months or so has shown me that it's no longer a dream, but something that will become more and more normal.

If I could earn any sort of full time wage from food/travel writing whilst travelling the world then I really don't think I'd have a single thing to complain about.

An Entomologist. I’ve sort of been doing it in a non professional way for a few years now but since lockdown it’s become an obsession… last summer I found, identified, photographed and recorded several very rare insects (and hundreds more common ones). I wish I could be paid to do it.

Musician, footballer, travel the world.

Something realistic I guess would probably just be my own boss for a small independent food and drink place I recon. Employ some decent people, research nice food and drink to serve people and make a decent wage without it being in something shitty and mundane like my current job.

Dream would be a Tour Pro Golfer. I don’t believe there’s a better job on the planet really.

Realistically, a few things. I do always wish I’d have learnt a trade, electrician probably, I’m interested in electrics and how things work like that. I think I’d of enjoyed going to cooking school, and I’d also have liked to have maybe gone in to surveying.

You might be thinking why didn’t I just go in to any of those things? And the answer is I don’t really know - maybe it’s a case of hindsight, maybe these are things I’ve realised I’m interested in as I’ve got older. When I was 18 the only thing I wanted to do (because it was drilled in to me that I had to if I wanted a decent job) was go to uni and I ended up doing a degree that sounded interesting at the time and I did enjoy it, but was probably not the smartest for after uni career prospects. The part of that sentence in brackets is of course complete bollocks - and when I have kids I’ll be making sure I tell them there’s loads of avenues for you to get a decent job, and a decent job Is any that you enjoy doing.

In saying all of the above I enjoy what I do now and I’m happy. Hasn’t turned out badly for me and I’m grateful for that.

So my 9 year old son turns to me the other day and says, "When I'm older I want to be a GP" as you can imagine I was beaming with pride and said "nice one son, being a doctor is a very noble profession, its nice to help people" to which he replied.... "A doctor? I didn't know you had to be a doctor to be a Game Player?"

I'd love to do property renovation full time, either to sell on or to rent out.

But dream job would be to have a little Jazz Bar. 24 hour place that's really dark and atmospheric, no food ,(or very limited menu) and definitely no TV. Just continuous music and good drinks. Where the hell you'd succeed with this kind of joint I have no idea, but that's the dream.

I have no idea what the job title would be but my dream job would be working on a cannabis farm as the guy developing new strains.

Failing that, I suppose I could also live with being a travel writer. You know, if I had to...

Senior strategist at an f1 team. So you don't have to do all the manual work, travel economy and lug the equipment around, but you get to travel the world in style and have the free time to enjoy the destinations, and make important decisions on race day. I imagine the pressure is unbearable though.
