Ouest France

“The Rennais did not take advantage of the dynamic to endanger the defence of Leicester. On the contrary, the young SRFC goalkeeper, Dogan Alemdar, had to work on a counter-attack (15') and on a point-blank header from Amartey (49').

“But only two minutes later, the Frenchman Wesley Fofana perfectly cut a corner with his head to equalise (1-1, 51 '). Enough to sting the people of Rennes. Tait gave hope with a flat foot (2-1, 76').

“Despite Rennes' onslaught, Leicester resisted to qualify for the quarter-finals. Several contentious actions in Schmeichel's area could have resulted in a penalty for the SRFC, in particular an elbow on Guirrassy (90'+4) and a hand from Maddison (90'+8).

L’Equipe

“Rennes saw their regrets for having conceded a very avoidable second goal at the end of the first leg (thus losing 2-0) and for not having been able to score there despite their chances, sharpened with force this Thursday evening, where they did not finally imposed only 2-1, at Roazhon Park. The Breton club certainly dominated the first period.

"But after scoring in the eighth minute on their first opportunity, thanks to Bourigeaud, perfectly served by Terrier (8th), the Bretons did not have any more then, despite a crushed recovery from Truffert (35th). Alemdar, the young Turkish goalkeeper (19 years old) from Stade Rennais even had to work in front of Barnes (15th) and Ihenanacho (26th), the Foxes logically proceeding on counterattacks, as in the first leg…

Cheltenham Free Bet with William Hill

“…Two contentious situations could have offered at least a penalty to Rennes in added time (a handball from Maddison and a confused stampede on Meling). The Bretons, their coach Bruno Genesio in the lead, were therefore extremely disappointed, frustrated and angry at the final whistle.”

The Telegraph, John Percy

Leicester’s defensive frailties have defined their season but this was an heroic performance of resilience, epitomised by the returning Wesley Fofana.

Making his first appearance in ten months, Fofana was outstanding and his first Leicester goal ultimately proved crucial as Brendan Rodgers reached his first European quarter-final on a night of high drama.

While Fofana was excellent for 78 minutes, there was also a fine late save from Kasper Schmeichel as Leicester produced a brave, gritty display to secure victory on aggregate, sparking bad-tempered scenes at the final whistle.

For the inaugural Uefa Europa Conference League, this was an absorbing advertisement, and Rodgers could still salvage a difficult season with silverware.

The Sun, Graeme Bryce

Wesley Fofana ended eight months of injury hell by heading Leicester City into the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.

The 21-year-old Frenchman made a spectacular return from the broken leg, suffered against Villarreal in pre-season, when he cancelled out Benjamin Bourigeaud's early opener with a soaring header.

The Foxes were made to suffer when sub Flavien Tait restored Rennes' lead late on with a drilled shot which deflected in off Fofana's studs.

But Brendan Rodgers' heroes side grimly held on as Kasper Schmeichel defied Sehrou Guirassy with a stunning late point-blank save with his outstretched left boot as Rennes laid siege to the Dane's goal.

The Daily Mail, Tom Collosmosse

Wesley Fofana showed why Brendan Rodgers expects him to become a world star by returning from injury to score his first Leicester goal and seal a place in the last eight of the Europa Conference League.

The French defender had not played since breaking a leg and damaging ankle ligaments in an August friendly with Villarreal, but he crowned a superb display with the decisive goal early in the second half of a game that threatened to boil over.

Rennes boss Bruno Genesio and Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall were booked after the final whistle and players had to be separated by stewards when substitute James Maddison riled his opponents with wild celebrations.

Sky Sports, Peter Smith

Wesley Fofana scored his first goal for Leicester on his return from a broken leg to send the Foxes into the Europa Conference League quarter-finals - although Brendan Rodgers' side had to hang on desperately for a 3-2 aggregate victory after losing 2-1 on the night at Rennes.

Twenty-one-year-old Fofana was cruelly sidelined in pre-season during a friendly with Villarreal but marked his surprise return to the starting XI with a brilliant glancing header from a corner (51) - the goal which would prove to be decisive in this dramatic, brilliant tie.

When that effort cancelled out Benjamin Bourigeaud's early opener (8) it seemed Leicester had regained control against an energetic Rennes side, who are just a point off second in Ligue 1 and who were roared on by an incredible home support.

Rennes boss makes Leicester City 'more attractive' claim over refereeing decisions
Bruno Genesio also hit out at the lack of VAR in the Europa Conference League, saying it is better not to introduce a new competition at all if doesn't have the same rule as others

Rennes manager Bruno Genesio has claimed his side are not as “attractive” as Leicester City and suffered at the hands of the referee on Thursday night as a result.

Genesio watched his team win 2-1 at Roazhon Park but lose 3-2 on aggregate with City earning a place in the last eight of the Europa Conference League. The game ended in controversy with a handball appeal in the final seconds of the game when a free-kick was nodded down and landed on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s arm.

It was one of a number of penalty decisions that Genesio felt Rennes could have been given. There was a moment in the first leg where the ball struck Caglar Soyuncu on the hand in the box, while there were more appeals during the second leg as well as City had to deal with a bombardment from the French side.

The lack of a penalty award prompted the Rennes boss to hit out at the officials and claim that, as a more “attractive” club, City were given more favourable decisions across the tie.

Genesio was also irritated by the lack of VAR in the Conference League. He said there should be consistency across all of Uefa’s competitions.

“The first feeling is disappointment,” Genesio said in a press conference. “Unfortunately, we lacked a little bit of maturity. We lacked efficiency because we had the chances to score the third goal and take them into extra-time.

“And we missed the VAR. In the two matches, Rennes suffered at least one penalty, which would have changed a lot of things. When we organise a European competition, we have to organise it under the same conditions as the other European competitions, otherwise, it is useless, it is better not to do it.

“I don't want to condemn the referee, even if I think that at one point, it was going a little too much in the same direction for it to be just chance. We have several contrary decisions, at least three in the two matches. Perhaps Rennes are a less attractive club for a quarter-final than Leicester.”

City move on to the last eight where they will take on former European champions PSV Eindhoven. Meanwhile, Rennes return their focus to Ligue 1, where they are in contention for Champions League qualification, sitting fourth, one point off second.

Oh my God, but I don't think there are people who really think we're stronger than Leicester.

Who among other things lost the Champions League place on the last day like us, with the debacle of the home game with Tottenham.

However, it would be the same team that has raised two cups in the last 4 months and in the current market has spent almost € 70 million (Daka, Soumaré, Vestergaard plus Bertrand on a free transfer), selling only Ghezzal for € 3 million to Besiktas.

Ah, the days when Napoli were scared of us because we’d signed Vestergaard and Bertrand.

The Rennes coach is a right salty little sausage isn't he? The 'more attractive' comment is clearly ridiculous. Just pure sour grapes. The dressing room comment is almost as idiotic. A team goes through in those circumstances and you expect them not to have a bit of a blow out. Is he mad? Maybe the kitman or whoever should've tidied up a bit but whatever, they've got cleaners and maintenance staff surely?

He has a point about VAR though. It's ridiculous that it isn't used in this competition. Not sure it would've got them a pen at the end but they could've quite easily been down to 10 men before that anyway.
