glebe_sydneyfox Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 Look man, he might not be the signing we wanted but a decent punt on loan
Grebfromgrebland Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 Can't wait to see him in a City shirt. Along with Barnes in a front 3.
Rigga Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 To me, it’s a no risk signing. was impressed with him at times during his Fulham spell and is a forward thinking player much like Barnes when he receives the ball. He has to play on the right to get into our starting eleven. 1
drumbeat Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 It's official; the 'look man' pun has been done. It can be forgotten now. (and it wasn't even very good/original/creative in the first place ) 1

It's not that he's an awful player by any stretch, it's that out of the zillion wingers out there, we should be doing better. Can't expect people to get happy clappy over an average player anymore. Yes there are a zillion wingers out there but we dont have a bottomless pot to be able to go and get one im afraid. Dan James for 30m for example? Really? Way over priced. Lookman could be better than average, he's only 23. Maybe some decent coaching and we'll be laughing.....

Any world class wingers would cost far too much. The best we can hope for for today is someone who will be an upgrade on what we currently have, and Lookman will be just that. And with the Mahrez point, nobody is saying we should get a like for like Mahrez replacement, but you're kidding yourself if you think that nobody will be making comparisons to Mahrez with whoever we bring in. Nobody will match up to what we had in Mahrez unless we spend upwards of £80m, which we will never do. ...it would be natural to remember who we had in that position previously but anyone who would continually compare the two is just being foolish!!! As I said we do not need to spend big money or go anywhere near proven top 6 players, just someone who actually plays that position and that position only even if we are taking him from the Championship or French Ligue 2 so we could develop him.
escape2victory Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 Understand the logic behind the signing, 2 players in each position in the front 4, allows for decent rotation and not having to completely change formation should Barnes get injured. Anyone else think the back up is stronger than the first team ?! Perez Maddison Barnes Albrighton Iheanacho Lookman Vardy Daka 1 1

Soumare has looked well short of the pace in the minutes he’s had, Vardy has scored twice and both Bertrand and Vestergaard have been unavailable. Once Soumare and Daka have settled I’m sure they will get more minutes. It’s early days for them both and they will need time to adjust to the pace of the league. What they need to do is take a chance when on comes to them. 10

Edingleyfox Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 (edited) This is the first season that we haven't sold a top player to finance the transfer business so we have to be realistic. I wish we could afford £13 million and another 20 million in salaries to get Ronaldo for a couple of years but unlike United/City and Chelsea we have progressed a lot more on merit and shrewd investments. At least Lookman has some pace and premiership experience and as a loan signing with an option to buy seems a no brainer to me. Edited 31 August 2021 by Edingleyfox
Grebfromgrebland Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 Also Daka might've got on the pitch if we didn't have injuries during games

That's why if we are linked with Beradi there is excitement and if we are linked with Lookman, well, not so much. Put it this way, if we signed George Baldock from Sheff Utd for instance, would you have certain expectations about how he would play for us or would you say "wait and see you entitled tw@ts" in the vain hope that somehow he might become a totally different player than the one we already know just by pulling on a blue shirt? What I’m saying is give whoever comes in a chance and see what our manager and coaches can do. Us older fans realise that these are very heady exciting times indeed, but by entitlement I mean our fans expect each season to be better than the last and that simply isn’t achievable. Maybe if we could nip out and by a Ronaldo and Verane or a Grealish we could permanently stay up there but for us it’s about fighting above our weight with a good bit of luck. We simply do not have the financial clout of the others so the status quo will be maintained but we can sure as hell make a fist of it as indeed we have these last few years. enjoy the ride my friends but don’t underestimate our limits in the grand scheme of things.

Could switch with Barnes easily during games and give people something else to worry about. Mahrez used to swap over to the left side in games, hopefully Rodgers has this in mind for Lookman & Barnes…
drumbeat Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 One of the things that impressed me (and there were a few) on the vid posted earlier is that he tries to stay on his feet - probably due to the low central of gravity mentioned upthread. A number of those challenges, he could have gone down (like Maddison or Grealish?) but he maintained possession and that retained the team's momentum. His close control is good, he has two good feet and rides challenges. He seems to have positive instincts and drives forward, given the chance. I like. (but then of course these highlights vids obviously show... highlights. What they don't say is whether they can do it on a rainy midweek evening in Stoke, or whether they pack a mardy sulk for the other 90% of games)

Deeg67 Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 You know, I've been saying for weeks that the lack of credible links to right wingers indicated Rodgers was happy with his options there and didn't think it was a problem that needed solving. Well, I think this proves it. Lookman is disappointing not because he's terrible (he's an adequate squad player) but because his signing confirms our manager believes Perez is good enough at RW. And because he'll make 5 first-team additions this window, none of whom would play in our regular 11 if everyone was healthy. He's here to be Barnes' backup, not to play on the right. It's another guy to come in and warm the bench until the Carabao Cup. 1

Im not that excited by this but we have three options that can play on the right and one on the left so it makes us more balanced in some ways.

Ric Flair Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 Newcastle in for David Brooks. The question we need to ask is, is Brooks a better right winger/ACM than Lookman? 1
TMELcfc Posted 31 August 2021 Posted 31 August 2021 Better than nothing, pace to burn... Doesn't fit the bill though in terms of wanting left footed right winger, but then again, Perez isn't left footed... hopefully he offers more than just closing down

He's going to do the same thing - run until he gets tired, lob crosses, and blind acorn a goal once or twice a season. Edited 31 August 2021 by Deeg67

There’s an air of Jarrod Bowen about Brooks, I think he’s one of those who would actually do well in the premier league on a better team.
