And the good takers watch the keeper and the ball.

Their goalie was going early. We didnt need to find the corners. It's good penalty taking.

The good takers hone their skill on the training ground and don't let the keeper influence what they do. Vardy comes to mind.

We're through that's all that matters.

Gawd how we did not put up 5+ on these lads I will never know. They were a circus, could not keep possession to save their lives. Daka and Lookman need to be more decisive and get the ball forward, Barnes repeatedly had miles of space but they dallied on the ball too much. We have to attack, and we need to do it more quickly. This habit of playing down to our competition needs to stop.

Each time he has played so far he has had to play as part of a heavily rotated side that has barely played together, if you are expecting him to step in and to run games like Youri you are being very unfair on him.

I’m not expecting him to be Youri, but he wasn’t anything really today. Was guilty of playing backwards way too much. Should’ve scored and that might’ve changed his game but whatever the excuse (and I get that it was a patched up team) he didn’t have a good game today. Got mugged a number of times and didn’t offer any creativity.  I want him to do well btw, I’m just being honest about his performance.

What I liked about tonight was that we kept attacking at pace. Taking men on, trying to make things happen. Very little sideways passing just to maintain possession.

The result was that we did create opportunities, but also gave the ball away a lot: inviting Brighton to come onto us and having to fight to get it back.

Not sure it was a great experiment in that regards and may be the best argument to Brendan to continue with the slower game!

But I'm not sure turgid would be a good description of the game - more disjointed than anything.

Nice to be through though... But in years gone by, getting to the QF of a major cup competition would have been massive. Shows where we arebat the moment that we can just use the word nice. :twitch:

Good result, average performance but who cares! Onto the next round.

Daka just looks better and better everytime he plays. Barnes had a few moments of his old self. Madders made a slight change in being positive going forward.

Bertrand and Daley-Campbell were really poor. Just kept losing the ball. Easily caught in possession. Also, unfortunately, Thomas is just too light weight. He got pushed off the ball so many times and looked out of depth.

Vestergaard... Well really no reason to add anything to what's already been said.

Bring on the Arsenal!

Harsh on KDH thought he okay… also had to play next to Hamza

As in what is that comment all about? Hamza did he job relatively well. KDH not so much. Not sure how much that had to do with being next to Hamza? Or is it just something you would always say against Hamza no matter what he does?

Daka needs to be on the shoulder of the last man, it’s Barnes and Lookman’s job to get the ball to him.

It is starting to look like Barnes might end up losing his place in this side all together, I love him and he is a great player, but we suite a front two, and I can’t see where Barnes fits into that?

Daka showed today at times he’s unplayable, broke away with ease from their defenders and he times his runs perfectly, there’s no surprise there’s been a stark improvement in Madders too since he’s come in, and we’ve switched to a back three, Madders has space now to pick his passes out and get on the ball.

In short, we’re a much better team when we play two attackers, and the full backs provide the width.

Only Barnes, Daka and Ward really stepped up. The rest of the ‘fringe’ players weren’t up to much. And Vestergaard was awful once again.

Still, the penalties were good and we got the job done. Onwards and upwards. As omens go, beating Brighton in the last 16 isn’t a bad one…

They were hit too close to the Keeper. None were in the Corner where it's really difficult to save them. Had their Keeper stood his ground he would have saved a couple. The really good keepers watch the kicker and the Ball.

If we had Kicked  like you wanted, he would of Saved them..:giggle:

We have & Need diversity, & we should use them..

Got home in time for the second half. What a shite 45 minutes of football that was. Couldn't string 4 passes together most of the half.

We're through though, and that is all that matters.

Jorginho is one of the best penalty takers out there. He always waits for the keeper.

Hazard was pretty good at this too. Both have better records than Vardy.

Baloteli also.

There are different styles.

Generous assessment of Hamza there. Had another poor match for me. Mainly wall passes back to the central defender even in acres of space. I love his full on tackles, he did one great one tonight but other than that he was ineffective, offered zero threat going forward and got schooled defensively by Brighton’s clever movement.

Yeah I feel he’s got his level which is what you say of just laying the ball off either behind him or to the wing backs - anything beyond that he didn’t look good or at the standard we really need now to go forward - he occasionally tries something braver and it doesn’t quite come off. I think Brendan was testing him out for the Ndidi role as his top end strength is that tackle (as long as he doesn’t get sent off 😂) but he’s probably no better than Mendy who hasn’t made the Prem or Europe squads. I would imagine being that he was captain as well tonight that this could have been a last attempt to see if we can make use of him in a role and see him step up to that level. It’s a shame because if he’s playing Newcastle he seems to have stormers 😂

I can see now Hamza probably going out on loan in January to see if regular games somewhere can push him back into being a competitor again, I’d also imagine Mendy will be registered instead unless his agent gets him a transfer.

Hamza and KDH instead of N’didi,Tielemans and Maddison not sure anyone in their right mind would expect a better/polished performance…great result, Ward brilliant….ffs last eight, again……chance against any of what’s left for a Semi final place.

Not the best game to watch, second half in particular but we’re through, and Vards & Youri have had a needed break. Kasper gets pelters at times over his kicking but take a bow Jason Steele! A true example of a keeper with no distribution at his feet!!

I do agree with you, like you say we needed to reset the squad and try and go back to basics. As the season goes on we will need rotation.

I want to see Barnes take the initiative a bit more and look to come for the ball, he has a habit sometimes of waiting for the ball to come to him and it’s why phases of play can often pass him by. If we can get Patson, Barnes and Lookman signing from the same hymn sheet, with will a formidable set of attackers to rotate.

Thought Lookmans defensive positioning all night was quality, and his link up with Barnes was nice in parts. it’s nice to know we have wingers waiting when we need them.

Don’t forget the gulf in class between Choudhury, KDH and Soumare & Tielemans, so for them to get as much out the game as they did is impressive.

0 Qualms with us playing a similar team in the next round, priority should 100% be on League and Europa. Allow the fringe players to get some game time, and try show their class.

Hamza had a better game than KDH did tonight.

Thought KDH didn't impact the game as much as we needed. We started well, got the goal, then seemed to lose our way in the first half.

Thought Hamza was one of the better performers in midfield. Although both wingers scored, their overall contribution was marginal. The defence looks proper dodgy with the ex-saints pair.

Somehow the achilles heel of corner defending still present this whole year. Needs sorting.

The match itself was very typical of a league cup game.

A lot of key players rested, and some precious game time for some fringe players.

Had a really bad feeling about penalties, watching some of our previous shoot outs hasn't done much for my confidence however some absolutely brilliant penalties tonight.

Given the circumstances,  that's a good result and now to look forward to the draw on Saturday.

Sunderland would be the best tie in terms of the club, but personally I hope we get Brentford so I get another chance to tick off their stadium having missed out in the PL.

This has a midweek trip to West Ham written all over it though.

Our record in shoot outs is extremely good, won 4 of our last 5 before tonight. Now won 5 of our last 6.
