Very much 'closer to home', but some on here might have known this former Leicester teacher.

My headteacher at Lancaster Boys and French teacher in my 1st year. A compassionate man, helped me through a particularly tough time and always found him to be reasonable and a good listener. Interesting to read about the Samaritans commitment too. Our last brief conversation came as a 5th year when we could dress as we liked, he stopped me in the corridor, looked up and down at my chequered suit, leather tasseled slip on shoes, patterned shirt and trilby hat and declared "You look like a clown boy!" to which I replied "Yes sir!". I didn't know if he was saying don't wear it again or if he just thought a timely interjection from a respectable adult would remind me it was a school and not a night club and just steer me back on focus and importantly stop me taking it further and making a real prat of myself in the wider world (become the laughing stock of college the following term). There will be so many people who benefited from his lifetimes work.

Former Oxford and West Ham (briefly) player Joey Beauchamp has died at 50. Always really rated him for Oxford in the 90s.

Remember him often being shown on Saint & Greavsie scoring a cracker as Jim Rosenthal is an Oxford fan I believe (which increased their mentions), always very cultured, flamboyant curlers like Le Tissier goals. The mystery was why he didn't get to to play at a higher level, I remember West Ham taking him briefly but it not working out, I think they call his type an enigma but on his day lovely to watch.

Thanks for posting this. I have passed it on to my brother who is a former pupil at Lancaster Boys. He will probably not have seen this so I am sure he would appreciate it.

Sad news. The Members did some great songs - more original than most. To judge from the odd interviews I've read/watched, he seemed like an interesting and likeable bloke, too, who still had plenty to say for himself.

I seem to recall that he had some sort of chronic health condition (MS?), though the late 70s punk/post-punk generation are all getting on a bit now....

Would it be in bad taste to throw in a late prediction for an Under-40 to die this year?

To be fair, it wouldn't be in any more bad taste than doing our yearly predictions is anyway lol

Who are you thinking of?
