Didn't Fiorentina haggle over £500k or something ridiculous for Ghezzal for about 3 weeks as well last summer?

That’s given me flashbacks, was to Besiktas, but yes was about £2m or something in the end after a very decent loan spell where he’d got the top goals/ assists or something in the league 😅

Our reputation in the transfer market is carried by a tiny number of incredible deals, the majority work out like this.

In spite of the Maguire/Chilwell deals we are only slightly in the black and that is about as good as it will get now. Very few clubs make a consistent profit on transfers and many make substantial losses. We do OK but nothing really special.

Yeah. We're above average but hardly the "kings of the transfer market" like we'd like to think we are.

Correct. Your first post was spot on. The miracle of Vardy has papered over some cracks for a while.

Play hard ball, Praet needs to understand if the Italians don’t cough up it’s time to come home. No games just hard cash or FRO we are no charity.

...unfortunately we are back at the Player having the final say of where he wants to go!!!

A newly promoted team may wish to pay £12m + but if Praet only wishes to go to Torino, then we have a problem. The only good thing, would be, getting him off the wage bill.

Make him come back and loan him out to KFC

I'll be really annoyed if we agree to something like that.

He's done well enough over here for us to allow us to fleece at least £15m out of a bottom half prem/promoted side!

We need to be more like Liverpool with stuff like this.

Unfortunately there isn’t a queue of clubs willing to take him.

This kind of deal is very common in Italy, it might be the best we get. I also don’t think it’s awful given the circumstances: not played much football over the last 2 years, currently injured, one year left on contract.

I’ve never understood how Liverpool get so much from their sales, solanke and brewster being the big ones for me. 2 players that never showed ability in the professional game and managed to fetch over £20m. Madness.

Is Preat that bad? I think we will need him next summer, is he any worse than what we have?

I'm not sure that should be the benchmark.

....for a lot of the posters on here, and I include myself in this, if he came back he would not be played!!!

You can't make people want him. If they were interested, they'd come and bid for him.

...I don't think we are very strong negotiators..!!!

A lot of negotiating is about the starting position. With Praet we paid a lot to get him here and decided we wanted rid. We backed ourselves into a corner with this one. We cannot be this reckless. It will set us back.

Christ, if I'm interpreting that right and the obligation to buy really does hinge on him getting goals and assists then he's not going anywhere

I think it is only the bonuses that goals and assists etc. would be linked to

The obligation to buy if it has a specific clause will likely be based on apperances

This conveniently excludes our 'unrealised assets'...

Fofana       37m    → ??

Maddison   23m   → ??

JJ                8m   → ??

Wilf            15m    → ??

Soyuncu    19m    → ??

i’m surprised one of the newly promoted sides isn’t banging the doors down with a 10m offer. You won’t find a better player for that price.

Full belgian international. Premier league experience.

I guess it comes down to the fact he wants to be in Italy and that limits us dramatically. why does it never feel like we have power in these situations. Is it because the clubs know we simply can’t afford to carry these wages around whereas other clubs like the entitled six could easily say, do one and not worry too much?

Don`t understand. He is a good player for a team that needs such a player, this is clearly not us for some reason.

Therefore he is a block on wages and finances for new players.

If we sell him for 5m now, a significant loss for sure, then we get 5m and we no longer have to pay his wages (Or at least a significant portion of)

All this what he is worth, we should play hardball, etc is very childish and chest beating nonsense.

Move him out for the best price we can get, make money available for new players.

It really is that simple

Sorry, thats my 5c   :surrender:

Minamino is the latest one. Bought for £7m, handful of Premier League starts, only scores 3 goals but now for sale at £17m. Most clubs that would be a failure and a loan/free transfer. Must be a premium added for having Liverpool on a CV.

Transfers are not just about profits.  It also excludes the fact that our transfer dealings have allowed a small to middling provincial club that never won anything to qualify for Europe and win trophies.

Just to stray on topic for a moment, I like Dennis.  I wouln't be sorry to have him back he has a good engine and good quality without really excelling at any one thing.

It’s how they’ve managed to fund this side. Coutinho is the only first team player that was sold (that comes to mind), the money is made from 4/5 fringe player sales that seem to make them £30/40m every summer. I reckon they’re cooking the books.

IIRC Minamino had a really low release clause which is why Liverpool could get him on the cheap. He was always more valuable than that, his transfer value just hasn’t altered much in essence. Not sure they’ll get many takers at that price anyway.

But still smart business by them, as they could always afford to speculate at that price and knew they could easily sell him for a profit if he didn’t quite cut it there.
